Midstream Energy Partners information

What is a Midstream Energy Partner?

Midstream Energy Partners are companies that operate within the midstream sector of the energy industry, focusing on the transportation, storage, and wholesale marketing of oil, natural gas, and other energy products. These companies act as a bridge between upstream producers (who extract oil and gas) and downstream companies (who refine and sell finished products). Midstream Energy Partners often own and manage pipelines, storage facilities, and processing plants, playing a crucial role in ensuring energy resources move safely and efficiently from production sites to end users.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Midstream Energy Partner, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Midstream Energy Partner, you need a solid background in energy infrastructure, logistics, and business development, often supported by a degree in engineering, finance, or a related field. Familiarity with pipeline management systems, regulatory compliance software, and industry-specific certifications like PMP or OSHA are commonly required. Strong negotiation, relationship-building, and strategic planning skills help differentiate top performers in this field. These competencies ensure efficient operations, regulatory adherence, and successful partnerships in the complex energy sector.

What types of projects and collaborations can a professional expect when working at a midstream energy company?

Professionals at midstream energy companies often work on projects involving the transportation, storage, and distribution of oil, natural gas, or related products. Collaboration is typically cross-functional, with frequent interaction between engineering, operations, regulatory, and commercial teams to ensure safe and efficient pipeline operations. You may be involved in tasks such as project planning, coordinating maintenance schedules, and ensuring compliance with environmental and safety standards. These roles require adaptability and strong communication skills, as teams often work together to solve logistical challenges and respond to industry changes.

Job description

Business Analyst, Operations Planning & Analysis (Contract)

Our client, a leading Calgary-based energy infrastructure and midstream company, is seeking an experienced Business Analyst, Operations Planning & Analysis for a focused 4-month contract engagement (with potential for extension). Reporting to the Senior Director, Operations Planning & Analysis, this role is dedicated to supporting the effectiveness, efficiency, and financial governance of their Midstream Operations group spending.
Working closely with Midstream Finance, Engineering, and Operations teams, you will play a key role in optimizing business processes, managing the maintenance capital portfolio, tracking Authorizations for Expenditure (AFEs), and supporting investment planning.
Please note: This is a financial and operational planning role focused on cost control, capital portfolio governance, and spend analysis—it is not an IT Business Analyst position.

Your success will be defined by your ability to:
  • Coordinate and maintain the capital portfolio governance framework by managing an internal database of actual vs. forecast spend across Midstream Operations and Engineering
  • Prepare, organize, and process documentation to raise Authorizations for Expenditure (AFEs), ensuring accurate cost allocations and tracking
  • Analyze financial and operational data from multiple systems (JD Edwards, Workday, internal databases) to track KPIs, evaluate operating costs/G&A, and create meaningful leadership reporting
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams on G&A planning, workforce planning, and labour allocations across operating assets and capital projects
  • Monitor operational performance metrics, identify spend trends, and deliver actionable insights for continuous improvement and cost optimization
  • Assist in supporting strategic initiatives, including the upcoming implementation of an Integrated Business Planning (IBP) tool
Your strengths include:
  • Strong background in Capital Planning, Capital Portfolio Management, Cost Control, Project Controls, or Operations Finance within asset-intensive industries (Midstream, Energy, Utilities, or Industrial)
  • Proven expertise in AFE administration, maintenance capital tracking, budget management, and financial variance analysis
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel for data analysis and financial modeling; experience with Power BI, Workday, and JD Edwards is considered a strong asset
  • Strong data storytelling, problem-solving, and communication skills to collaborate effectively with engineering, finance, and operations stakeholders
  • Self-starter mindset with the ability to step into a fast-paced environment, work independently, and deliver immediate value with minimal ramp-up time
  • Understanding of midstream operations, logistics, freight, or rail management is an asset
