Job description

Summary:
The City of Lawrence is seeking School Crossing Guards for the 2026-2027 school year. These are part-time, temporary positions. Duties include responsible part-time work facilitating safe passage at school crossings. An employee in this class is responsible for directing children on foot and motor traffic at a street location where children cross when going to and from school.
The current crossing guard vacancies are expected to serve the following locations:
9th & Schwartz (Sunset Hill Elementary School)
Law Avenue & Princeton (Deerfield Elementary School)
27th & Louisiana, Access Tunnel (Billy Mills Middle School)
Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will be in good physical condition, with no loss of sight or hearing, and will be able to stand for extended periods in all weather conditions. This position requires the ability to attend occasional staff meetings. This position also requires the ability to work independently and with little supervision. Prefer prior experience interacting with children in a leadership role. Must be dependable and available to work until the end of May 2027. The position may be asked to return if warranted.
Candidate must successfully pass a City administered background check prior to start.
Hours:
Approximately or generally, depending on school:
Monday, Tuesday, Thursday & Friday 7:30AM - 8:00AM and 3:00PM - 3:30PM
Wednesdays 7:30AM-8:00AM and 1:45PM - 2:15PM.
Ending in May 2027. Reimbursed at 2.0 hours a day.
Possible on-call position(s) may be available to cover Crossing Guard absences as needed. Those interested in back-up only positions, please note this preference on your submitted application.
Salary:
$13.60 per hour with $100 annual bonus for perfect attendance and an additional $100 annual bonus if asked to return to the position the following school year. Paid 10 days a year when school is not in session. Holidays are not paid.
