Position Title: Middle School Special Education Teacher
Contract: 9 Months
Employment Status: Full-time, On-site
Reports To: Principal
Qualifications:
  • At least a Bachelor's Degree in Education
  • Valid state of Alabama teaching certificate in the appropriate field of study
  • Teaching experience preferred, particularly in the biological sciences

Job Goals: To provide specialized instruction to meet the needs of assigned students based on their Individualized Education Plan (IEP).
Job Functions and Responsibilities:
  • Collaborate with students, parents, and other members of staff to develop Individualized Education Plan (IEP)
  • Evaluates and assesses student progress against instructional objectives
  • Follow state-mandated due process procedures and functions as the IEP Manager to assigned students.
  • Comply with the federal, state, and school regulations and policies for special education teachers.
  • Teach and mentor students as a class, in small groups, and one-on-one to address skill deficits
  • Implement IEPs, assess students' performance, and track their progress
  • Update IEPs throughout the school year to reflect students' progress and goals
  • Implement an instructional, therapeutic, or skill development program for assigned students and show written evidence of preparation as required
  • Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of students assigned
  • Work cooperatively with classroom teachers to design accommodations for regular curricula as needed, and assist special education students in regular classes with assignments
  • Participate in required special education meetings on a regular basis
  • Conduct assessment of student learning and use results to plan for instructional activities and teaching plans
  • Present subject matter according to guidelines established by IEP
  • Employ a variety of instructional techniques and media to meet the needs and capabilities of each student assigned
  • Supervise and mentor aides and paraprofessionals as well as plan instructional activities and interventions these individuals will implement with assigned students
  • Use technology in teaching/learning process
  • Conduct ongoing assessments of student achievement through formal and informal assessment
  • Provide or supervise personal care, medical care, and feeding of students as stated in IEP
  • Be a positive role model for students, and support mission of i3 Academy
  • Create a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students
  • Collaborate with administration in regards to student behavior as applicable. This includes assistance during crisis situations and de-escalating conflicts as well as the development and implementation of behavior intervention plans
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers regarding management of student behavior according to the student's IEP and behavior intervention plan as appropriate
  • Prepare and help students transition from one grade level to the next grade level
  • Consult school staff and outside resource providers regarding education, social, medical, and personal needs of students
  • Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students
  • Assist in selection of books, equipment, and other instructional materials as required
  • Establish and maintain open communication by conducting conferences with parents, students, principals, and teachers
  • Maintain a professional relationship with colleagues, students, parents, and community members
  • Use effective communication skills to present information accurately and clearly
  • Participate in staff development activities to improve job-related skills
  • Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents required
  • Attend and participate in faculty meetings and serve on staff committees as required
  • Other reasonable duties as assigned by supervisor
