Job description

Job Definition Exciting Opportunity. The Superior Public Library is looking to hire a Youth Services Librarian that will provide fun and enriching programs for our youth and families in our community. Work Location: Superior Public Library - 1530 Tower Ave.

Work Schedule: Typical working hours will be 8:00 am - 4:30 pm, Monday-Friday; 1 evening/week until 7:15 pm and approximately 1 Saturday/month 9:45 am - 3:15 pm. Please attach a resume and cover letter with your application. Purpose & Overview Performs professional library services under general supervision at the Superior Public Library.

Duties include staffing public service desks and other service areas; selecting, cataloging, and maintaining library materials and special collections; providing reference and research services; planning programs and conducting outreach. Librarians perform entry- to mid-level professional library work requiring independent judgment in service or program areas and collection development. Librarians may be responsible for planning, overseeing and evaluating library programs or services under the direction of a manager and may represent the library to other organizations.

Librarians at this level may also perform duties of a Library Technician. Employment Standards Primary Responsibilities Provide friendly and knowledgeable assistance at the Youth Services Desk, helping patrons discover materials, answer questions, access library resources, and make the most of their library experience. Organize, prepare, and deliver fun and enriching in-person and passive programs for youth and families that promote reading, literacy, learning, and library use.

Conduct outreach visits and tours at the library and in the community, including schools, daycares, and other youth-focused organizations. Support and help implement the Summer Reading Program and plan and present early literacy Storytimes for children. Select materials for assigned collection areas in accordance with the Collection Development Policy, and maintain those collections through ongoing evaluation, weeding, and development to ensure they meet community needs and interests.

Other Responsibilities Performs copy or original cataloging and maintains records in the library database. Performs acquisition procedures, including ordering and claims. Maintains professional and technical expertise through training, workshops, and professional reading.

Opens and closes the library and supervises staff and daily operations in the manager's absence. Provides public service desk coverage and performs duties outlined in the Library Technician role. Troubleshoots basic technology issues and assists patrons with public computers and digital services.

Provides reference and readers advisory services, assisting patrons with accessing library and online resources. Brings library services into the community by collaborating with area organizations and promoting services to diverse audiences. Assists patrons with local history and other special collections.

May serve as a branch librarian, including responsibility for branch program and service development. Updates website and social media content with announcements and events. Markets library materials, services, and programs through communications such as flyers, press releases, newsletters, event calendars, and social media.

Communicates library policies and procedures clearly and effectively in a customer-friendly manner. Uses computers and online tools proficiently to provide library service. Upholds and promotes Superior Public Library Customer Service Standards.

Promotes and maintains a safe and secure environment. Performs other duties as required by the Library Director. Qualifications Working knowledge of Professional library principles, practices, and procedures.

Dewey Decimal Classification system. Computers and related devices, including peripherals and mobile technology. Internet navigation, database searching, and familiarity with emerging technologies.

Knowledge of electronic resources and collections. Familiarity with word processing, simple desktop publishing and graphics programs. Skills Skilled in providing direct patron assistance at service desks.

Proficient in selecting, evaluating, and weeding materials. Ability to design and deliver engaging programs for all ages. Experience in assisting patrons with computers, databases, and digital resources.

Ability Communicate and present information clearly and concisely verbally and in writing. Maintain effective and courteous working relations with supervisors, staff, and the public. Prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.

Operate library technologies and equipment proficiently. Apply principles of patron privacy and intellectual freedom to library services. Sit, stand, walk, climb, and stoop.

Lift and move materials up to 15 pounds. Work independently, organize, demonstrate initiative, and make decisions as required. Maintain regular and reliable attendance and punctuality.

Requirements/Special Requirements Training and Experience Any combination of training and experience which would provide the required knowledges and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain these knowledges and abilities would be: Equivalent to a Bachelor's degree and one year of public library experience comparable to a Library Technician at Superior Public Library. A Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) from an ALA-accredited program preferred.

Special Requirements Driver's License Requirement: Must possess valid driver's license or be able to provide suitable transportation as approved by the department head. Residency Requirement: No residency requirement. Post Job Offer Drug Screen Requirement: Must pass a post job offer drug screen prior to hire.
