Job description

The role - what you'll do
Barr is seeking a senior mining engineer to join our mining team. In this hybrid role, you will support the Engineering and Design business unit group on mine design and mine planning (both short- and long-term); sequencing and scheduling, including implementation planning and development sequencing; ore blending plans; mine reclamation plans; report writing; overall mine development mineral project studies (scoping through feasibility); and economic analysis. This person will provide technical expertise as well as oversight and management of various mineral projects involving both ferrous and nonferrous minerals.
Administrative responsibilities such as business development, project management, project planning, budgeting and scheduling, and workload estimating are also part of this strategic role. This person will have the opportunity to serve as a mentor to junior and mid-level engineers, helping them develop their technical and project management skills by reviewing technical reports, providing guidance on analyses, and overseeing their financial and client management on projects.
Your impact - key responsibilities
  • Technical expertise: develop and provide oversight of mining studies including mine designs, mine plans, and schedules. Perform reserve estimations and technical report writing for mine studies such as preliminary economic assessments, prefeasibility, and feasibility studies.
  • Project management: manage projects or portions of mine-related projects involving both metal and non-metal mining; perform project planning, budgeting and scheduling, and workload estimating.
  • Field support: provide on-site technical oversight and expertise depending on project and needs.
  • Administrative: support business development activities, organization of large multi-disciplined projects, and organization of large field investigation data sets for resource estimation or geotechnical purposes.
  • Mentorship: provide support through training/mentorship for other mining team members.

About the opportunity
  • Work arrangement: a hybrid work arrangement may be considered for this position. A hybrid work arrangement refers to splitting time worked between a Barr office and a home office. This position can be based out of Barr's Salt Lake City, Utah; Denver, Colorado; Albuquerque, New Mexico; or Reno, Nevada, office.
  • Travel expectation: up to 10 percent domestic fieldwork, depending on project needs.
  • Work environment: Ability to work in locations that have rough terrain typical of construction, manufacturing, and/or rural outdoor sites with limited accessibility, moving machinery, and other conditions typical of industrial facilities. Candidates must be able to perform job duties with or without reasonable accommodation.

About you - required core competencies
  • Education: bachelor's degree in mining engineering or related discipline.
  • Experience: 10+ years of relevant experience.
    • Demonstrated leadership skills.
    • Demonstrated project organization and management skills.
    • Experience working at mining operations.
    • Experience with cost and financial modeling.
  • Licenses/certifications: Professional Engineer (PE) license or Qualified Person (QP) certification preferred, or a willingness to obtain QP if not currently held.
  • Software: proficiency with mine design and modeling software such as Vulcan, Minesight, or similar. Familiarity with AutoCAD. Basic understanding of Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Driver's license: possession of a current, valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship by Barr, now or in the future.

Compensation: Anticipated range of $95,888-$138,112 annually. Compensation will vary based on relevant experience, education, skill level, and other compensable factors. Employees in this position may also be eligible for a discretionary cash bonus based on team and individual performance. This position is classified as exempt (salaried) under the Fair Labor Standards Act.
