Job description

Maintenance Mechanic III - Bar Harbor
Maintenance Mechanic work is performed in a highly regulated critical environment that supports data centers, live animal colonies and sensitive research facilities on a 24/7 basis. These systems regulate environmental conditions required for research integrity and animal welfare. Failures or incorrect operation can lead to loss of research data, interruption of scientific operations, or harm to animals. Technicians at all levels are responsible for the operation, maintenance, modification, calibration, troubleshooting, and repair of piping and mechanical systems, high pressure steam & condensate systems, compressed air, process equipment, and other related systems as required by departmental needs. Maintenance Mechanic Level III: All level II duties plus oversees contractors involved in capital & operational projects, develops & issues bid specifications, creates & updates engineering specifications, writes standard operating procedures, participates in long range capital planning, evaluates 3rd party training programs and mentors & leads junior technicians.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead the design, programming, and commissioning of Process Equipment and other mechanical systems.
  • Serve as primary technical liaison for the specification, design, installation and commissioning of new construction and renovation projects.
  • Develop and implement preventive maintenance strategies and system performance benchmarks.
  • Conduct root cause analysis of system failures and implement corrective actions.
  • Train and mentor junior and mid-level technicians.
  • Ensure compliance with institutional safety, and environmental standards.
  • Utilize computer programs including a CMMS to document maintenance activities, calibrations & system changes, and generate reports.
  • Maintain detailed records for audits, inspections, and performance reviews.
  • Participate in rotating on-call shifts and respond to on-campus emergencies within one hour on a 24/7 basis.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, including shift work on nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Occasional travel may be required for training and/or support of maintenance activities at other sites.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Expert-level knowledge of Mechanical principles.
  • Strong analytical skills for effective problem-solving.
  • Able to operate and maintain a complex mechanical systems in critical environments, utilize a CMMS, read and interpret engineering drawings, wiring diagrams, control schematics, and piping system diagrams.
  • Demonstrates a willingness and ability to quickly learn and apply new technical skills in facility maintenance and operations.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills for effective collaboration and documentation.
  • Level III Technicians must demonstrate a proven track record of exceptional work ethic, strategic thinking, strong leadership and mentoring abilities.
  • Trade licenses & certifications will be held in high regard.
  • Certification in confined space entry or ability to qualify within 6 months.

Pay Range: $33.51 - $48.60
