What are Mid Level Developers?

Mid Level Developers are software professionals who have gained several years of experience beyond entry-level positions and are proficient in coding, debugging, and collaborating on projects. They possess a strong understanding of programming languages, frameworks, and software development processes. Mid Level Developers often take on more responsibility than junior developers, such as mentoring newer team members, contributing to architectural decisions, and ensuring code quality. They are expected to work independently on tasks, communicate effectively with team members, and deliver reliable solutions to complex problems.

What is the difference between Mid Level Developer vs Junior Developer?

AspectMid Level DeveloperJunior Developer

ResponsibilitiesDeveloping features, debugging, collaborating on projectsAssisting in tasks, learning codebases, under supervision
Work EnvironmentIndependent work, team collaboration, project ownership

The main difference between a Mid Level Developer and a Junior Developer lies in experience, skill proficiency, and responsibilities. Mid Level Developers have more experience, can handle complex tasks independently, and contribute significantly to projects, whereas Junior Developers are still learning foundational skills and typically work under supervision.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Mid Level Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Mid Level Developer, you need solid programming skills in languages such as Java, Python, or JavaScript, along with a relevant degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, integrated development environments (IDEs), and frameworks such as React or Spring Boot is typically required. Effective problem-solving, teamwork, and strong communication skills help you collaborate and adapt to project needs. These abilities ensure you can deliver reliable code, work smoothly with colleagues, and contribute to successful software projects.

What opportunities for professional growth can a Mid Level Developer typically expect within a software development team?

As a Mid Level Developer, you can expect to take on more complex projects, mentor junior team members, and gradually assume greater ownership of features or modules. Many organizations support growth through peer code reviews, access to learning resources, and the chance to participate in architectural discussions. Advancement paths often include moving toward senior developer roles, technical leads, or specializing in areas like DevOps or security, depending on your interests and the company's needs.

Job description

Creativity. Innovation. A desire to effect positive change. That's what it takes to work at Fuss & O'Neill - because that's what we do for the communities in which we work: we create, innovate, and design long-lasting improvements that improve quality of life. Quality of life is also important on the job, so we've prioritized work-life balance by offering flexible/remote work opportunities, part-time benefits, and generous PTO. We believe that each day is an opportunity to support one another, to support our clients, and to support our communities. If you feel the same, then you've found your future.
We are seeking a Senior Water Resources / Senior Dam Engineer to join our growing Water Resources team. This is a newly created role driven by a significant and expanding portfolio of dam repair, dam removal, and climate-resiliency projects across New England. The successful candidate will play a key leadership role, overseeing complex projects from planning through design and permitting, while mentoring junior staff and supporting business development initiatives.

This position is ideal for a licensed Professional Engineer with deep technical expertise in dam engineering and water resources, strong project management skills, and a passion for resilient, sustainable infrastructure solutions.
  • Lead and manage dam repair and dam removal projects from planning through design, permitting, and construction support
  • Develop project scopes, fees, schedules, and budgets; oversee contracts and project delivery
  • Prepare and review engineering analyses, technical reports, plans, specifications, and cost estimates
  • Coordinate and support local, state, and federal permitting and grant applications
  • Apply hydrologic and hydraulic modeling to support design and regulatory submissions
  • Collaborate with clients, regulators, and internal multidisciplinary teams across New England
  • Support business development efforts, including funding strategy development and proposals
  • Mentor and provide technical oversight to junior and mid-level engineers
  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering or related discipline
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license
  • 10+ years of experience in water resources and dam engineering
  • Strong knowledge of dam safety regulations, codes, and industry standards
  • Experience leading dam repair and removal design efforts
  • Proven ability to prepare high-quality technical reports and permit applications
  • Proficiency with hydrologic and hydraulic modeling software
  • Working knowledge of CAD-based design tools
  • Strong project management, communication, and mentoring skills
  • Ability to travel up to 10-15% throughout New England

This is a hybrid role, offering the best of both worlds-collaborate in-office with a high-performing team and enjoy the flexibility of working remotely part of the week. We're committed to supporting work-life balance while maintaining strong team connection and project delivery.
  • Schedule Flexibility: Customize your work schedule to fit your life.
  •  Health & Wellness: Comprehensive health benefits to keep you and your family healthy.
  •  Continuous Learning: Access to online courses, conferences, and learning materials to fuel your professional growth.
  •  Paid Time Off: Take the time you need to recharge with our generous paid time off policy.
  •  Career Advancement: Clear paths for promotions and the opportunity to take on new challenges.
  •  Fun Team Culture: Regular team-building activities, happy hours, and company outings.
