What is a mid backend developer?

Mid Backend Developers are software engineers with intermediate experience who focus on building, maintaining, and optimizing the server-side components of web or mobile applications. They typically work with databases, APIs, server logic, and integration with front-end systems. Mid-level developers have a solid understanding of programming languages such as Java, Python, Node.js, or Ruby and are expected to contribute to code reviews, troubleshoot issues, and implement new features under minimal supervision. Their role bridges the gap between junior developers, who need more guidance, and senior developers, who handle architecture and high-level decisions.

What are some typical challenges a mid backend developer might face when integrating new technologies into existing systems?

As a Mid Backend Developer, one common challenge is ensuring that new technologies or frameworks integrate smoothly with legacy systems without disrupting current operations. This often involves understanding both the old and new codebases, data migration, and dealing with compatibility issues. Collaborating closely with frontend developers, DevOps, and QA teams is essential to address potential bottlenecks and maintain performance. Additionally, thorough testing and documentation are crucial to ensure long-term stability and maintainability.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a mid backend developer, and why are they important?

To excel as a Mid Backend Developer, you need strong programming skills in languages such as Java, Python, or Node.js, along with a solid understanding of databases and API design, typically backed by a bachelor’s degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with tools and systems like Git, RESTful APIs, Docker, and cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure) is usually required. Problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and teamwork are crucial soft skills that set high performers apart. These competencies ensure efficient development, maintainability, and seamless integration of backend services in dynamic technical environments.

ACTIVE SECURITY CLEARANCE AT THE TS/SCI POLYGRAPH LEVEL IS REQUIRED

We are seeking a versatile Full-Stack Systems Engineer to join a small, high-impact team in Annapolis Junction, MD, delivering enterprise web services hosted in AWS. In this mid-level role, you won't just take tasks off a board; you will own features end-to-end, drive system architecture decisions, and elevate the reliability and performance of systems that end-users love. As an engineer at Nyla, you are ever-curious and eager to make a direct impact. Working with limited supervision, you will design and implement features across the full stack—from intuitive user interfaces to secure backend APIs and data layers. You will take true ownership of services in production, driving continuous deployments, proactive monitoring, and root-cause troubleshooting. If you thrive in an Agile environment where clean code, creative problem-solving, and team collaboration come together to support critical missions, Team Nyla is looking for you.

The annual base salary range for this role is $170,000-$201,000 (USD) , which does not include discretionary bonus compensation or our comprehensive benefits package. Actual compensation offered to the successful candidate may vary from posted hiring range based upon geographic location, work experience, education, and/or skill level, among other things.

Full-Stack Development: Professional experience developing software across the stack using one or more primary languages/frameworks (PHP, .NET/C#, Java, Node.js, Python, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Vue.js, or React).

Linux Operations: Hands-on experience configuring, operating, and managing software deployed on Linux platforms (service configuration, log parsing, basic networking, and shell automation).

API Development Security: Solid understanding of RESTful API design principles, web authentication/authorization standards, and secure coding practices.

Database Management: Practical experience working with relational databases, including database design, query optimization, and index tuning.

Agile Collaboration: Demonstrated capability to communicate effectively, estimate effort accurately, and deliver working software iteratively within an Agile team.

Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, or a related technical discipline, PLUS 7+ years of professional software development experience OR High School Diploma / GED, PLUS 11+ years of hands-on technical software engineering experience in lieu of a degree.

, Desired Skills

Hands-on experience building, deploying, and managing applications in AWS (IAM, EC2, ALB, S3, RDS, CloudWatch) or Azure equivalents.

Practical experience configuring and tuning web/application servers (Nginx, Apache, Tomcat).

Automation and scripting proficiency using Python or PowerShell, along with familiarity with CI/CD pipeline tools.

Direct experience supporting production web services, including participating in incident response and on-call rotations.
