Mid Backend Developer information

What is a mid backend developer?

Mid Backend Developers are software engineers with intermediate experience who focus on building, maintaining, and optimizing the server-side components of web or mobile applications. They typically work with databases, APIs, server logic, and integration with front-end systems. Mid-level developers have a solid understanding of programming languages such as Java, Python, Node.js, or Ruby and are expected to contribute to code reviews, troubleshoot issues, and implement new features under minimal supervision. Their role bridges the gap between junior developers, who need more guidance, and senior developers, who handle architecture and high-level decisions.

What are some typical challenges a mid backend developer might face when integrating new technologies into existing systems?

As a Mid Backend Developer, one common challenge is ensuring that new technologies or frameworks integrate smoothly with legacy systems without disrupting current operations. This often involves understanding both the old and new codebases, data migration, and dealing with compatibility issues. Collaborating closely with frontend developers, DevOps, and QA teams is essential to address potential bottlenecks and maintain performance. Additionally, thorough testing and documentation are crucial to ensure long-term stability and maintainability.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a mid backend developer, and why are they important?

To excel as a Mid Backend Developer, you need strong programming skills in languages such as Java, Python, or Node.js, along with a solid understanding of databases and API design, typically backed by a bachelor’s degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with tools and systems like Git, RESTful APIs, Docker, and cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure) is usually required. Problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and teamwork are crucial soft skills that set high performers apart. These competencies ensure efficient development, maintainability, and seamless integration of backend services in dynamic technical environments.

Job description

Company Description

Do you want to work for a company where the people are the purpose? At Grimco, our developers operate across a real, multi-platform technology stack — and their work ships. As a Senior Developer, you’ll contribute to a platform that has powered the business for decades and continues to modernize. You’ll bring strong development fundamentals, an ability to learn and work across languages and environments, and the judgment to navigate complex systems confidently.

Job Description

Key Responsibilities & Duties

  • Build and maintain business application features across a multi-platform technology stack.
  • Design and implement integrations between internal systems, external partners, APIs, and data pipelines.
  • Apply modern development practices — clean code, modular design, SQL-first data access, and structured testing — regardless of the language or environment.
  • Serve as a technical resource on complex projects, contributing to design decisions and seeing work through to delivery.
  • Identify and follow through on opportunities to modernize and improve existing systems.
  • Collaborate with IT, project management, QA, and business stakeholders to deliver well-scoped, well-documented solutions.
  • Learn, maintain, and expand RPG applications as part of a broader development role.

Work Authorization: Candidates must be authorized to work in the
United States. Grimco does not provide employment visa
sponsorship (e.g., H-1B, O-1, TN) and will not do so in the future
    for this position.

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
•    5+ years of professional software development experience.
•    Demonstrated ability to learn and work in unfamiliar languages, frameworks, or platforms.
•    Strong SQL and relational database skills — you write efficient queries and understand data modeling.
•    Experience building integrations between systems — APIs, file-based exchanges, ERP connectivity, or similar.
•    Comfortable working with legacy code you didn’t write — reading, understanding, and improving it with confidence.
•    Clear communication skills — you can explain technical decisions to non-technical stakeholders without losing the important detail.
•    Security awareness baked into how you work, not treated as an afterthought.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Background in distribution, warehousing, manufacturing, or order management systems.
  • Experience with ERP platforms — custom-built or mid-market.
  • Exposure to EDI or data interchange — X12 transaction sets, flat file automation, trading partner integrations.
  • Cloud integration experience — REST/JSON APIs, Azure, AWS, or similar.
  • Familiarity with IBM Power Systems or other enterprise backend platforms.
  • RPG or IBM i development experience, or a demonstrated interest in the platform.
