What is a microwave RF engineer?

A Microwave RF Engineer designs, develops, and tests high-frequency circuits and systems used in wireless communication, radar, and satellite applications. They work with components such as amplifiers, filters, antennas, and waveguides to ensure optimal signal performance. Their role involves simulation, prototyping, troubleshooting, and optimizing RF and microwave systems to meet performance and regulatory standards.

What does a microwave RF engineer do?

As a Microwave RF Engineer, your workday often involves a blend of design, simulation, and hands-on testing of RF and microwave circuits and systems. You’ll collaborate closely with cross-functional teams such as hardware engineers, project managers, and manufacturing staff to ensure prototypes meet performance specifications and project deadlines. Expect to use specialized software for modeling and spend time in the lab troubleshooting, tuning, and validating hardware using advanced test equipment. Regular meetings to review designs, address technical challenges, and document results are also a key part of the role. This dynamic environment enables continuous learning and the development of innovative solutions in high-frequency technology.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a microwave RF engineer?

To thrive as a Microwave RF Engineer, you need a solid understanding of electromagnetic theory, circuit design, and RF/microwave components, typically with a degree in electrical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with simulation tools like HFSS, ADS, or CST, as well as hands-on experience with network analyzers and spectrum analyzers, is often required, and certifications such as FCC or IEEE membership can be advantageous. Job description

IMMEDIATE OPENING – FULL TIME POSITION

                                       RF TRANSMITTER ENGINEER

Diversified Technologies, Inc. (“DTI”) is an international leader in the design and manufacture of high-power microwave, RF, and pulsed power systems. Our exceptional engineers and scientists collaborate to develop the world’s most powerful solid state and vacuum electronic transmitters for radar, RF heating and particle accelerator applications. They also develop and build antenna systems, and engage state-of-the-art research, for industry and government (e.g., the national laboratories).

We seek a talented RF Engineer to join the team at our headquarters in Bedford, Massachusetts. The ideal candidate will be a self-motivated individual, able to take a lead role as an active team player (i.e., think, calculate, design, build, test) in our state-of-the-art programs. Key areas of experience could include RF circuit design for power amplifiers, receivers, and antennas, and/or the use of RF and microwave computer aided design tools, and/or “hands on” work on electromechanical assemblies. The RF Engineer will work alongside world‑class engineers and scientists through the entire product life‑cycle of our one-of-a-kind systems: from proposal writing, initial specification, design, production, testing and installation. Importantly, the RF Engineer will have a leadership role driving new R&D projects from their ideation and proposal through to completion.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform engineering assignments of some complexity.
  • Work with some “general,” some direct supervision, with occasional opportunity for independent work.
  • Confidently apply basic engineering principles to perform routine design, fabrication, modification and evaluation of electrical and electromechanical components or systems.
  • Prepare design plans and part specifications under supervision.
  • Conduct analyses or tests of routine complexity in relation to new designs, methods, materials, or processes.
  • Provide recommendations as appropriate; offer feedback to managers and coworkers.
  • Occasionally review drawings, etc. prepared by technical support personnel.
  • Assist other engineers, technicians, interns.
  • Work on:
    • RF hardware / components: waveguide, resonant cavities, gigawatt short‑pulse and other antennas, etc.
    • RF systems: megawatt continuous and other high‑power RF transmitters (from VLF to W‑band) for radar, nuclear fusion for energy and other advanced programs.
  • Assist in RF and analog circuit design, PCB layout.
  • Test and troubleshoot existing and prototype RF systems.
  • Perform other tasks as instructed.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • Three years’ experience in RF systems (in industry or academia).
  • Demonstrable knowledge of RF hardware and test equipment.
  • U.S. Citizen.

Compensation:

  • Salary range $90,000.00 to $120,000.00 per year, depending on qualifications and experience.
  • Excellent benefits including health, dental, life, and disability insurance; 401K Plan; tuition reimbursement; paid holidays, sick leave and fifteen vacation days beginning year one.
