The Global Lab Infrastructure Design Engineer supports the planning and design of Microsoft engineering laboratories. This service engineering role translates product-team requirements into data-informed infrastructure strategies and design specifications that contractors can use for new laboratories and facility modifications.
The role requires working knowledge of power, cooling, physical infrastructure, capacity planning, and high-level networking considerations. It also involves using data, approved artificial intelligence tools, and automation to support engineering analysis, documentation, and decision-making.

  • Evaluate existing MLS facilities for power, cooling, networking, security, serviceability, operational readiness, and available capacity before recommending expansion or new construction.
  • Support build-versus-modify decisions using operational data, documented assumptions, utilization targets, lifecycle considerations, and input from regional MLS Site Operations teams.
  • Prepare design-intent packages for contractors that document performance requirements, equipment profiles, infrastructure dependencies, constraints, risks, acceptance criteria, and outstanding decisions.
  • Partner with Global Workplace Services, architects, engineers, project managers, and contractors to incorporate MLS requirements into detailed design, pricing, construction, commissioning, and operational handoff.
  • Collaborate with MLS Deployment Project Engineering and Microsoft product engineering teams to assess hosting demand, equipment roadmaps, deployment sequencing, networking dependencies, and longer-term infrastructure requirements.
  • Use approved artificial intelligence, analytics, scripting, and automation tools to support intake analysis, capacity evaluation, design documentation, reusable standards, and workflow efficiency. Validate outputs using approved data sources and engineering review.
  • Define operational acceptance criteria and support readiness reviews addressing safety, serviceability, documentation, monitoring, support ownership, and lifecycle requirements.
  • Communicate technical tradeoffs, recommendations, risks, and decisions to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Contribute to global laboratory standards, documented lessons learned, reusable design patterns, and process improvements across MLS.
  • Embody our culture and values.
