What are Microsoft Azure Engineers?

Microsoft Azure Engineers are IT professionals who design, implement, manage, and monitor cloud solutions using Microsoft Azure. They work with cloud infrastructure, networks, security, and storage, ensuring that applications and services are highly available and secure. Azure Engineers often collaborate with development and operations teams to deploy, manage, and optimize cloud workloads. Their expertise helps organizations leverage Azure's capabilities for scalable and cost-effective computing.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Microsoft Azure Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Microsoft Azure Engineer, you need strong expertise in cloud architecture, networking, and security, typically supported by a background in computer science or IT and relevant Azure certifications. Familiarity with tools like Azure Portal, Azure CLI, ARM templates, and monitoring systems is essential for daily operations. Problem-solving skills, effective communication, and adaptability are important soft skills that help navigate evolving cloud environments and collaborate across teams. These competencies ensure successful deployment, management, and optimization of cloud solutions, driving business agility and reliability.

What are some common challenges Microsoft Azure Engineers face when migrating on-premises systems to the cloud?

Microsoft Azure Engineers often encounter challenges such as ensuring seamless data migration with minimal downtime, addressing compatibility issues between legacy systems and Azure services, and maintaining security and compliance throughout the process. Collaborating closely with cross-functional teams—such as security, network, and application development—is essential to anticipate and resolve technical hurdles. Proactive planning and thorough testing are key strategies for overcoming these obstacles and delivering a successful migration.

Job description

Shape Your World

At Alcoa, you will become an essential part of our purpose: to turn raw potential into real progress. The way we see it, every Alcoan is a work-shaper, team-shaper, idea-shaper & world-shaper.

We are seeking a highly skilled Cloud Platform Engineer with strong technical and hands-on engineering experience in designing, implementing, and operating secure, scalable Microsoft Azure infrastructure and platform services. This role focuses on establishing and enforcing platform governance through Azure Policy, RBAC, and standardized resource configurations, ensuring compliance, auditability, and consistency across the environment, while also building enterprise-grade cloud environments and architecting modern cloud-native and distributed applications. In partnership with application teams, the engineer defines scalable, resilient architectures leveraging Azure PaaS capabilities and modern integration patterns, aligned with approved governance frameworks.

The role also supports advanced workloads, including Generative AI (GenAI), by establishing governance controls and designing secure, compliant environments with effective lifecycle management and policy enforcement. This position collaborates closely with security, architecture, and development teams to deliver standardized platforms, reusable solutions, and well-governed engineering practices that enable enterprise modernization.

About the Role:

  • Establish and enforce platform governance frameworks across Azure using Azure Policy, RBAC, and standardized resource configurations to ensure compliance, auditability, and consistency at scale.

  • Design, build, and maintain enterprise-grade Azure infrastructure, including landing zones, subscription architecture, networking, identity, and connectivity patterns aligned with organizational standards.

  • Architect and enable cloud-native and distributed applications in partnership with development teams, leveraging Azure PaaS services, APIs, messaging, and modern integration patterns.

  • Develop and support governed environments for Generative AI (GenAI) and other advanced workloads, ensuring secure design, policy enforcement, lifecycle management, and responsible usage of Azure AI services.

  • Implement and manage Infrastructure as Code (IaC) (e.g., Bicep, Terraform, PowerShell) to deliver consistent, repeatable, and automated deployments across environments using Azure DevOps.

  • Configure and maintain monitoring, logging, and observability solutions using Azure Monitor, Log Analytics, and diagnostic settings to ensure platform reliability, performance, and operational visibility.

  • Collaborate with security, architecture, and application teams to deliver standardized platforms, reusable patterns, and reference architectures that support modernization and scalability.

  • Provide technical guidance and consultation to application teams and business stakeholders on cloud architecture, platform capabilities, and governance requirements.

  • Ensure compliance with enterprise IT standards and regulatory requirements (e.g., ISO 27001, change management, disaster recovery, and security best practices).

  • Support cost optimization and financial governance (FinOps) by evaluating cloud usage, right-sizing resources, and aligning platform consumption with budget and sustainability targets.

  • Maintain and enhance existing cloud environments, including troubleshooting, performance tuning, and continuous improvement of platform services.

  • Develop and maintain technical documentation, including architecture designs, deployment procedures, governance standards, and operational runbooks.

What you can bring to this role:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or equivalent experience.

  • Minimum of 1-2 years of experience designing and deploying solutions in a cloud computing environment.

  • Minimum 3-5 years of experience in IT systems management.

  • Desire to work in a diverse, global, and fast-paced environment.

  • Strong hands-on experience with Microsoft Azure, including both IaaS and PaaS services, with a focus on designing and operating enterprise-scale cloud environments.

  • Proven expertise in cloud platform governance, including Azure Policy, RBAC, management groups, and subscription design, with a strong understanding of compliance and audit requirements.

  • Experience architecting and enabling cloud-native and distributed applications, leveraging Azure PaaS services, APIs, messaging, and modern integration patterns.

  • Proficiency in Infrastructure as Code (IaC) and automation tools such as Bicep, Terraform, and ARM templates, along with scripting experience (e.g., PowerShell) to support repeatable and idempotent deployments.

  • Strong understanding of cloud security, identity, and access management, including authentication, authorization, and secure design principles aligned with enterprise standards.

  • Experience implementing monitoring, logging, and observability solutions using Azure Monitor, Log Analytics, and diagnostic settings.

  • Knowledge of cloud governance frameworks and cost optimization practices (FinOps), including resource optimization, cost visibility, and budget management.

  • Familiarity with Azure DevOps and CI/CD pipelines to support automated deployment and lifecycle management of infrastructure and applications.

  • Experience supporting or enabling advanced workloads, including Generative AI (GenAI), with an understanding of governance, security, and lifecycle management considerations in Azure AI services.

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively across engineering, security, and application teams to deliver scalable, standardized platform solutions.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to provide clear technical guidance to stakeholders, application teams, and leadership.

  • Broad understanding of infrastructure, application, and operational processes, with experience supporting production environments and continuous improvement initiatives.

What we offer:

  • Competitive compensation packages, including pay-for performance variable pay, recognition and rewards programs, and stock-based compensation awards (3-year vesting schedule)

  • Flexible spending accounts and generous employer contribution to the HSA

  • 401(k), employer match up to 6%, additional employer retirement income contribution (no vesting period), and a non-qualified deferred compensation plan

  • 12 paid holidays per year.

  • 15 days of paid vacation (pro-rated from hire date).

  • Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
