Microsoft Access Database Developers often encounter legacy databases with outdated structures, limited documentation, and compatibility issues with newer software. Resolving these challenges typically involves reverse-engineering forms and queries, optimizing inefficient data models, and ensuring seamless migration or integration with other platforms. Strong troubleshooting skills and clear communication with end users are essential to understand requirements and minimize disruptions during updates or transitions.

Does MS Access have a future?

Microsoft Access remains a widely used database tool for small to medium-sized applications and is often part of the Microsoft 365 suite. While it faces competition from cloud-based and more scalable database systems, it continues to be relevant for desktop database development, especially for users with limited coding experience or specific business needs.

What coding language does MS Access use?

Microsoft Access uses Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) as its primary programming language for creating macros, automating tasks, and developing custom functions. VBA allows Access developers to extend database functionality and automate repetitive processes within the application environment.

Are database developers still in demand?

Database developers, including those skilled in Microsoft Access, continue to be in demand for managing and designing data systems in various industries. Their expertise in database design, SQL, and data management tools remains valuable as organizations rely on data-driven decision-making and digital transformation.

What is replacing Microsoft Access?

For Microsoft Access Database Developers, more scalable and robust database management systems like SQL Server, MySQL, and PostgreSQL are often used as replacements. These platforms support larger datasets, multi-user environments, and advanced security features, making them suitable for enterprise-level applications. Developers may also utilize cloud-based solutions such as Azure or AWS for modern data management needs.

What does a Microsoft Access Database Developer do?

A Microsoft Access Database Developer is responsible for designing, building, and maintaining databases using Microsoft Access. They create custom forms, queries, and reports to help organizations manage and analyze data efficiently. Their work often involves automating business processes, ensuring data integrity, and integrating Access databases with other systems. Developers also troubleshoot issues and optimize database performance to meet the needs of users and stakeholders.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Microsoft Access Database Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Microsoft Access Database Developer, you need strong database design skills, proficiency in SQL, VBA programming, and a solid understanding of relational database principles, typically supported by relevant education or certifications. Microsoft Access Application Development

Maintain, enhance, and develop in-house Microsoft Access applications supporting production, inventory management, shipping, and operational reporting.
Develop and modify forms, queries, reports, VBA scripts, macros, and linked tables within Access databases.
Ensure long-term maintainability, reliability, and scalability of internally developed applications.

SQL Reporting & Data Analytics

Write, optimize, and maintain SQL queries, views, and stored procedures to support operational reporting and business intelligence initiatives.
Build and maintain recurring dashboards and reports for Production, Quality, Finance, Inventory, and Shipping teams.
Analyze business data and identify opportunities to improve reporting accuracy, visibility, and operational decision-making.

API Integrations & Process Automation

Design, build, and maintain API integrations between Plex ERP and third-party or internal systems using REST/SOAP APIs, JSON, and XML.
Support integrations involving EDI partners, customers, scales, label printers, reporting systems, and other operational platforms.
Identify opportunities to automate manual processes and improve system efficiency across departments.
Ensure proper documentation, testing, release management, and version control practices are maintained for integrations and custom solutions.

Cross-Functional Collaboration & Documentation

Partner with department leaders to gather business requirements and translate operational needs into practical technical solutions.
Train and support power users on Plex ERP functionality, reporting tools, and custom applications.
Develop and maintain technical documentation, workflows, system procedures, and process maps to support long-term operational continuity.
Collaborate with leadership on continuous improvement initiatives related to systems, automation, and operational scalability.

Requirements

Qualifications:

3+ years of hands-on experience supporting and developing ERP systems within a manufacturing or distribution environment.

Ability to communicate technical concepts effectively to operational and non-technical stakeholders.
Experience with Plex ERP strongly preferred.
Experience within food manufacturing, meat processing, or regulated manufacturing environments strongly preferred.
Familiarity with Power BI, SSRS, or similar business intelligence tools preferred.
Familiarity with .NET, Python, or PowerShell scripting preferred.
Bachelor's degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, Business Technology, or a related field preferred; equivalent practical experience will also be considered.
