Job description

Role Summary

Reporting to the Engineering Manager, the Senior Relay Engineer is a key member of the Relay & Power Systems team. This role is responsible for designing electrical protective relay schemes and relay/control panels for various utility and industrial applications.

Responsibilities
  • Create construction package designโ€‘basis drawings (relay single lines, 3โ€‘line diagrams, schematics, logic diagrams, physical layouts, etc.) from customer specifications.
  • Develop the Bill of Material for projects.
  • Prepare technical proposals including cost estimates, which may involve site walkthroughs and visits to customer locations.
  • Develop and modify control house general arrangements.
  • Develop and administer functional acceptance test plans and procedures to ensure the quality of manufactured and integrated building and relay panel systems.
  • Lead a project team as the Lead Responsible Engineer or Project Manager for small projects.
  • Support the design, settings and functionality development of protective relays and relay/control panels, maintaining accurate documentation for all protection, control, and SCADA configurations.
  • Support testing of all aspects of protective relay and control schemes/panels in the production facility, including operation and manipulation of test equipment, and at the customer site if required.
  • Review engineering/design packages for accuracy for both internal and external vendor/AE designs.
  • Attend, participate, and report on all formal and informal training assignments.
  • Other duties as assigned.

What Youโ€™ll Need
  • Work Experience: 5 years of relay and electrical engineering experience with team leadership and/or project management experience.
  • Education: Bachelorโ€™s degree in electrical engineering (preferably Power or Protection/Controls).
  • Analytics / Computer Skills: Proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, etc.). Familiarity with all standard substation electrical protection and control drawings and configuration documents; programming, testing, and interfacing of microprocessor relays, devices, and controllers (SEL AcSELerator, Quickset, GE Enervista, Easergy, etc.).
  • Other Skills: Coordination and fault study tools, software, and methodology; standard high voltage substation equipment and low voltage auxiliary equipment; thorough understanding of communication protocols (DNP3, IEC 61850, MMS, GOOSE, SV).
  • Organizational Skills: Highly organized, detailโ€‘oriented, able to multiโ€‘task and shift priorities in a fastโ€‘paced environment.
  • Crossโ€‘functional Skills: Excellent customer service, selfโ€‘motivation, teamwork, strong presentation skills.
  • Communication Skills: Strong oral and written communication and presentation skills.
  • Physical, Mental and Visual Skills: Ability to see, talk, and hear; ability to sit for 8 hours a day.
  • Travel: Occasional travel to customer sites, vendors, or training sessions.
Qualifications We Prefer but Donโ€™t Require
  • Masterโ€™s degree in electrical engineering.
  • Completed 3 CEUโ€™s of formal Protective Relay application coursework.
  • Electrical field engineering experience in an industrial or utility environment.
  • Professional Engineering License or FE (Fundamentals of Engineering).
  • Proficiency with ETAP, SKM and experience performing Arc Flash studies.
