How much do microfabrication process engineering jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 4, 2026, the average yearly pay for microfabrication process engineering in the United States is $92,018.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $74,500.00 and $103,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Microfabrication Process Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Microfabrication Process Engineer, you need a solid background in materials science, semiconductor physics, and cleanroom fabrication techniques, typically supported by at least a bachelor’s or master’s degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with tools such as photolithography systems, plasma etchers, and metrology instruments, as well as experience with process simulation software, is highly valuable. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective teamwork are essential soft skills for excelling in this role. These capabilities ensure precise process development, yield optimization, and successful collaboration in high-tech manufacturing environments.

What are some typical challenges faced by Microfabrication Process Engineers, and how can they be addressed?

Microfabrication Process Engineers often encounter challenges related to process variability, contamination control, and maintaining high yields in a cleanroom environment. These engineers must consistently troubleshoot issues with photolithography, etching, or deposition steps, often requiring close collaboration with equipment technicians and R&D teams. Proactively documenting process changes, performing root cause analysis, and maintaining strong communication with cross-functional teams are key strategies for overcoming these challenges and ensuring continuous improvement in device fabrication.

What is microfabrication process engineering?

Microfabrication process engineering is the field focused on designing, developing, and optimizing processes to create very small structures and devices, typically at the micrometer or nanometer scale. It plays a critical role in manufacturing semiconductors, microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), and other miniature components used in electronics, biotechnology, and optics. Engineers in this field use techniques such as photolithography, etching, and deposition to fabricate intricate patterns and structures on materials like silicon wafers. The work requires knowledge of materials science, chemistry, physics, and engineering principles to ensure both precision and reliability in manufacturing.
