Biology Expert (PhD) โ€” AI Safety


Location: Remote (United States)


Engagement Type: Part-Time Contract


Compensation: $60 โ€“$100/hour


Commitment: 15โ€“25 hours per week (flexible up to 40 hours per week)


About the Opportunity

This opportunity is for PhD-level Biology Experts interested in contributing to advanced AI safety and evaluation projects. The role involves applying deep scientific expertise to evaluate and strengthen how next-generation AI systems understand and respond to specialized life-science topics.

No prior AI or machine learning experience is required. Training on the project workflow and evaluation process will be provided.

Responsibilities

  • Develop expert-level prompts across specialized biology and life-science domains.
  • Evaluate and annotate AI-generated responses for scientific accuracy, quality, helpfulness, and appropriate handling of sensitive content.
  • Apply structured evaluation guidelines to classify prompts, responses, and conversations.
  • Use scientific expertise and critical reasoning to identify inaccuracies, gaps, or potential risks in AI-generated content.
  • Contribute to improving the safety, reliability, and scientific accuracy of advanced AI systems.

Required Qualifications

  • PhD in Biology or a closely related Life Sciences field โ€” ongoing or completed.
  • Relevant areas of expertise may include Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Virology, Genetics, Biochemistry, Bioinformatics, Synthetic Biology, Immunology, or related disciplines.
  • Deep familiarity with modern laboratory and/or computational techniques within your area of specialization.
  • Strong scientific reasoning, analytical, and technical writing skills in English.
  • Sound professional judgment regarding biosecurity and responsible handling of dual-use scientific information.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow structured evaluation guidelines.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Research or academic experience related to biosafety, biosecurity, or pathogen biology.
  • Experience reviewing, grading, evaluating, or red-teaming technical or scientific content.
  • Experience conducting interdisciplinary biological research or evaluating complex scientific information.

Compensation

  • Competitive compensation of $65โ€“$70/hour.
  • Part-time engagement with 15โ€“25 hours per week, with flexibility up to 40 hours per week.
  • Independent contractor engagement.
