How much do metrology jobs pay per hour?
What is metrology?
A metrology job involves the science of measurement, ensuring accuracy and precision in manufacturing, engineering, and scientific processes. Metrologists develop, calibrate, and maintain measuring instruments to meet industry standards. They work in industries like aerospace, automotive, healthcare, and electronics to improve quality control and compliance. Their role is essential in ensuring products meet specifications and function correctly.
What does a metrology professional do?
Professionals in Metrology are typically responsible for calibrating and maintaining measurement instruments, performing precision measurements on manufactured components, and documenting results according to industry standards. They often collaborate closely with engineering, quality assurance, and production teams to troubleshoot measurement issues and ensure compliance with quality requirements. Daily tasks may also include analyzing measurement data, maintaining calibration records, and participating in audits or process improvement projects. This hands-on role is crucial in environments where precise measurements impact product quality, safety, and regulatory compliance.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed for metrology?
To thrive in Metrology, a solid background in mathematics, physics, and engineering, often paired with a relevant degree, is essential. Familiarity with precision measurement instruments, calibration procedures, and software such as CMM programming or statistical analysis tools, as well as certifications like ASQ Certified Calibration Technician, are highly valued. Excellent attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective communication are important soft skills. These capabilities ensure accurate measurements, adherence to quality standards, and successful teamwork in manufacturing or laboratory settings.
