What is a Metrology CT Scan?

A Metrology CT Scan is a non-destructive testing technique that uses computed tomography (CT) imaging to capture detailed 3D measurements of an object's internal and external geometry. This technology is commonly used in quality assurance, product development, and reverse engineering to inspect and analyze components with high precision. Metrology CT Scans are valuable in industries such as automotive, aerospace, and medical devices, where accurate dimensional analysis is critical. The process allows for the detection of internal defects, measurement of wall thickness, and verification of complex assemblies without damaging the part.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Metrology CT Scan technician?

To excel as a Metrology CT Scan Technician, you need a solid understanding of metrology principles, CT imaging technology, and typically a background in engineering or applied sciences. Proficiency with CT scanning software, 3D modeling tools, and data analysis systems, as well as certifications like GD&T or related quality assurance training, are often required. Attention to detail, problem-solving, and strong communication skills help technicians accurately interpret scan results and collaborate with engineering teams. These competencies are crucial for ensuring precise measurements, maintaining quality standards, and supporting advanced manufacturing processes.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in Metrology CT Scan roles?

One common challenge in Metrology CT Scan roles is ensuring accurate calibration and maintenance of the scanning equipment, as even minor discrepancies can impact measurement precision. Professionals often need to interpret complex 3D data, which requires a strong understanding of both the software and the physics behind CT imaging. Additionally, collaborating with engineers and quality teams to communicate results and troubleshoot part discrepancies requires clear communication skills and attention to detail. Staying updated with advancements in CT technology and evolving industry standards is also important for ongoing success.

What is the difference between Metrology Ct Scan vs Medical Imaging Technician?

ABOUT THE TEAM
We are looking for a skilled Metrology Technician to perform quality inspections on a wide variety of products that we design and develop. In this role you will operate metrology equipment to measure components and assemblies, working from established procedures and inspection plans to generate accurate, defensible quality data. As the Metrology lab grows, you will work across a range of equipment - Portable CMM, CNC/fixed CMM, CT scanner, laser tracker, and optical systems from manufacturers such as Hexagon, Zeiss, Keyence, and LK Metrology - supporting both Production and R&D through receiving inspections, in-process checks, and root cause investigations.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
  • Operate CMM and other metrology equipment to perform precise measurements of parts to a defined inspection plan.
  • Interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and GD&T (ASME Y14.5) to understand measurement specifications.
  • Run existing inspection programs and create or edit simple programs using the appropriate software.
  • Perform routine calibration and maintenance checks on lab equipment, and help keep the lab clean and organized.
  • Analyze measurement data and produce clear, detailed inspection reports.
  • Identify out-of-spec results and equipment issues, and escalate appropriately.
  • Document observations and communicate findings clearly to the cross-functional teams requesting support.
  • Suggest process improvements to enhance measurement efficiency and accuracy.
  • Help ensure compliance with industry standards (e.g., AS9100, ISO 17025).

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Associate's degree or equivalent technical training.
  • 2+ years of experience as a quality inspector or CMM operator.
  • Experience with metrology hand tools (calipers, micrometers, bore gages, thread gages, etc.).
  • Familiarity with CMM software; PolyWorks preferred (PC-DMIS, Calypso, or equivalent acceptable).
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and specifications.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. security clearance.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience with 3D scanning or CT scanning.
  • Experience with optical measurement systems (OMM or 2D comparator).
  • Working knowledge of GD&T (ASME Y14.5).
  • Experience with PolyWorks|DataLoop or similar metrology data management platforms.
  • Familiarity with AS9100 or ISO 17025 quality systems.
