Job description

ABOUT THIS ROLE

We're hiring drivers for our day program's morning and afternoon routes. You'll transport members of our day program between their homes and our Day Center in Omaha using a 15-passenger van. Some routes include wheelchair passengers.

This isn't just about getting from point A to point B. The members you drive are people you'll see every weekday. You'll learn their names, their routines, and the small things that make their morning go well. Safe driving is the job — but so is treating every rider with respect and building the kind of quiet trust that makes a good route feel easy.

SPLIT SHIFT: mornings 6:30–9:00, afternoons 2:30–4:30. Monday through Friday. No weekends. No holidays. If you've got 3+ years behind the wheel and a clean driving record, keep reading.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

  • Drive scheduled AM and PM routes safely and on time
  • Load, secure, and transport members and mobility equipment
  • Inspect, fuel, clean, and maintain agency vehicles

ROUTE DRIVING

  • Complete morning route (6:30 AM – 9:00 AM)
  • Complete afternoon route (2:30 PM – 4:30 PM)
  • Follow assigned pickup and drop-off schedules
  • Follow the most efficient route possible
  • Navigate the Omaha metro area
  • Complete member handoff to parent/guardian/caregiver at each stop

VEHICLE SAFETY

    • Follow all requirements for 15-passenger vehicle operation
    • Ensure all seat belts are fastened before moving
    • Secure wheelchairs with agency-approved harnesses per law
    • Work with your route monitor (a 2nd employee on your route) to keep everyone safe
    • No personal cell phones, texting, or wireless devices while driving
    • No smoking, tobacco use, alcohol, or impairing medications before or during shifts
    • Never allow an unauthorized driver to operate an agency vehicle

    VEHICLE UPKEEP

    • Complete pre-route van inspections (fluids, tires, lights, engine)
    • Fuel the van using agency gas cards
    • Maintain fuel and odometer records
    • Clean and sanitize van interior after each route
    • Full interior/exterior cleaning at assigned car wash monthly
    • Report mechanical issues immediately

    INCIDENT REPORTING

Notify the Director of Day Services immediately if:

    • Your driver's license is suspended or revoked
    • You receive a moving violation citation (including DUI)
    • You're involved in a motor vehicle accident (with or without members on board)
    • Any member issues or behaviors occur during route
    • Any illness, injury, or medication affects your ability to drive safely

    QUALIFICATIONS

    • Minimum age 19
    • Valid Nebraska driver's license
    • Clean DMV driving record — no violations in the past 3 years
    • 3+ years driving experience
    • Pass State and National background screening
    • Experience with wheelchair vans preferred (may affect starting wage)
    • Experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities preferred

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

    • Sit for extended periods while driving
    • Bend, lift, and carry objects up to 10 pounds
    • Assist members boarding and exiting the vehicle

    YOUR SCHEDULE

    • Monday–Friday, part-time (approximately 25–28 hours/week)
    • Morning route: 6:30 AM – 9:00 AM
    • Afternoon route: 2:30 PM – 4:30 PM
    • No evenings, weekends, or holidays

    WHAT YOU GET

    • Health, dental, vision, and short/long-term disability insurance for full-time employees
    • Mileage reimbursement
    • Accrual of paid sick time
    • Profit sharing
    • Professional development and training support
