Job description

Altitude Roofing
Location: Worcester, Massachusetts
Position: Full-Time Commercial Roofing Estimator

Position Overview

Altitude Roofing is seeking an experienced Commercial Roofing Estimator to join our growing commercial roofing division. This position is responsible for reviewing plans and specifications, performing detailed takeoffs, developing accurate project estimates, soliciting and evaluating vendor and subcontractor pricing, and preparing competitive proposals for commercial roofing projects.

The ideal candidate will have a minimum of three years of commercial roofing estimating experience and a strong working knowledge of commercial roofing systems and construction documents. Experience with The EDGE Estimating Software is strongly preferred.

The estimator will work closely with Altitude Roofing's estimating, project management, operations, and administrative teams from initial bid review through project handoff.

Responsibilities

  1. Review project drawings, specifications, addenda, bid instructions, and other contract documents to determine complete roofing scope.
  2. Perform accurate quantity takeoffs for commercial roofing projects, including roof areas, insulation, cover boards, membranes, flashings, sheet metal, accessories, fasteners, adhesives, and related components.
  3. Prepare detailed labor and material estimates for commercial roofing projects.
  4. Develop estimates for roofing systems including:
    • EPDM
    • TPO
    • PVC
    • Modified bitumen
    • Built-up roofing
    • Standing-seam and architectural metal roofing
    • Asphalt shingle roofing
    • Slate and specialty steep-slope roofing
  5. Identify project-specific requirements including insulation values, tapered insulation systems, vapor retarders, roof assemblies, perimeter and penetration details, warranty requirements, and manufacturer specifications.
  6. Solicit material pricing and subcontractor quotations and evaluate proposals for completeness and accuracy.
  7. Review bid documents for scope gaps, conflicts, alternates, allowances, unit prices, and potential project risks.
  8. Prepare competitive bid proposals, scope clarifications, exclusions, and alternates.
  9. Attend pre-bid meetings and site visits as required.
  10. Communicate with general contractors, owners, architects, manufacturers, suppliers, and subcontractors during the estimating and bidding process.
  11. Track bid results and assist management with evaluating historical pricing, production rates, and estimating performance.
  12. Upon award, provide a complete and organized turnover of the estimate, scope, assumptions, and project requirements to the Project Management and Operations teams.
  13. Maintain accurate estimating records and project documentation within Altitude Roofing's estimating and management systems.

Qualifications

  • Minimum three years of commercial roofing estimating experience required.
  • Strong knowledge of commercial roofing systems, materials, installation methods, and industry terminology.
  • Ability to read and interpret architectural drawings, roofing plans, details, specifications, and contract documents.
  • Experience performing detailed digital takeoffs and developing labor and material estimates.
  • Experience with The EDGE Estimating Software strongly preferred.
  • Understanding of commercial roofing manufacturer specifications and warranty requirements.
  • Strong mathematical, analytical, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to identify scope gaps and potential project risks before bid submission.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple estimates and bid deadlines simultaneously.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Outlook, and standard construction software.

Preferred Experience

Candidates with experience estimating large commercial, municipal, institutional, multifamily, and public-sector roofing projects are strongly preferred.

Experience with prevailing-wage projects, public bidding requirements, manufacturer warranty systems, tapered insulation design, architectural sheet metal, and complex reroofing projects is also highly desirable.

What We're Looking For

Altitude Roofing is looking for an estimator who understands that successful estimating involves more than completing a takeoff. The right candidate will be able to thoroughly evaluate a project, understand how it will actually be built, identify risks before they become problems, and produce estimates that are both competitive and profitable.

Accuracy, accountability, organization, and the ability to meet bid deadlines are critical to success in this position.
