Job description

Job Summary:

The Fabrication Quality Control Technician is responsible for conducting thorough quality control (QC) inspections and administering related processes to ensure that all company fabrication activities fully comply with design drawings, specifications, and the requirements outlined in the Quality Management System.

The technician collaborates closely with fabrication personnel to coordinate and document each phase of the fabrication process, ensuring that all steps are properly recorded and traceable. Additionally, this role involves coordination with Quality Assurance personnel, materials testing laboratories, and relevant company assets to confirm that all contract obligations are met.

Furthermore, the Fabrication Quality Control Technician works in partnership with project management teams to facilitate timely and accurate inspections of required fabrication items, supporting the overall success and compliance of fabrication projects.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

The Fabrication Quality Control Technician ensures fabrication integrity by:

  • Enforcing AISC quality standards across all activities.
  • Collaborating with management to maintain consistent QC policies.
  • Assisting with project-specific QC plans.
  • Training staff on tablet-based QC software for efficient documentation.
  • Inspecting and recording delivered materials for compliance.
  • Checking fabrication items for non-conformances and documenting results.
  • Performs inventory inspections and carries out inventory maintenance tasks
  • Attending preconstruction meetings to set QC expectations.
  • Supporting the QC Manager by performing in process inspection, bolt testing, weld mapping, material tracking, updating maintenance logs, welding machine verification, painting QC, and performing Final inspection records.

Skills, Knowledge, Qualifications and Experience:

A degree in engineering, construction management, engineering technology, industrial technology, or a related field is preferred.

Applicants should have experience in construction or fabrication quality control, but those with a related four-year degree may qualify even without direct experience.

Candidates should have structural metal quality control experience and be familiar with AWS D1.1 or D1.5 welding codes and inspection requirements. Preference goes to those holding or can attain the Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) credential.

A solid working knowledge of construction material testing procedures and their requirements is essential. The candidate must demonstrate the ability to interact in a professional manner with both company personnel and project owners.

Proficiency in communication is required, including strong verbal and written skills, as well as interpersonal and organizational abilities. The candidate should also be capable of using computer programs and tablet-based quality control software.

The ability to gather data, establish relevant facts, and draw valid conclusions is important for this role. Additionally, a commitment to upholding the company's values is expected.

Physical Demands / Work Environment:

In this position, employees will regularly need to speak and listen. They often must stand, walk, use their hands and fingers, handle objects, feel, and reach with their arms. Employees may also be required to sit, climb or balance, as well as stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Occasionally, lifting or moving items up to 25 lbs is necessary. The role requires specific vision abilities, including close, distance, color, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
