What is a metal bellows?

Metal bellows are flexible, accordion-like components made from thin-walled metal, designed to absorb movement, compensate for misalignment, and isolate vibration in mechanical systems. They are commonly used in applications such as piping systems, vacuum technology, aerospace, automotive, and industrial machinery to accommodate thermal expansion, pressure changes, and mechanical motion. Metal bellows can be manufactured in various shapes and sizes depending on the specific needs of the application, offering both flexibility and durability.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a metal bellows technician?

To thrive as a Metal Bellows Technician, you need strong mechanical aptitude, experience in metal fabrication or welding, and typically a high school diploma or technical certification. Familiarity with tools such as TIG welders, calipers, micrometers, and blueprint reading software is essential. Attention to detail, problem-solving, and effective teamwork are standout soft skills for this role. These skills ensure the precise manufacturing and quality assurance of metal bellows used in critical industrial and aerospace applications.

What are some typical challenges faced by professionals working in metal bellows manufacturing, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in metal bellows manufacturing often encounter challenges related to precision fabrication, quality control, and meeting tight tolerances required for various applications. It's essential to stay updated with advancements in forming and welding technologies, as well as to work closely with engineering and quality assurance teams to ensure each bellows component meets stringent industry standards. Continuous training and collaboration with experienced colleagues help address these challenges, while a proactive approach to troubleshooting and process improvement can enhance both product quality and workflow efficiency.

What is the difference between Metal Bellows vs Pipe Fitter?

Job description

Build Something Bigger With Us.

For more than 70 years, Senior Metal Bellows has been pushing the limits of innovation—designing and building custom-engineered metal bellows for industries that demand the best: aerospace, defense, energy, and beyond.

We’re not just making parts—we’re making cool things that others can't. And we want you to be part of it.

Position Summary

We are seeking skilled and detail-oriented CNC Machinists to support high-quality manufacturing operations. The ideal candidate combines strong machining knowledge with hands-on problem-solving ability and a commitment to safety, quality, and continuous improvement.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate CNC mills, lathes, and other machining equipment.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, GD&T, and work instructions.
  • Select appropriate tooling, fixtures, feeds, and speeds for efficient production.
  • Perform first-piece inspections and in-process quality checks using precision measuring instruments.
  • Troubleshoot machining issues and adjust programs or machine settings as needed.
  • Optimize cycle times and machining processes to improve efficiency and reduce scrap.
  • Maintain production schedules while ensuring product quality standards are met.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Minimum 3 years of machining experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Strong understanding of machining principles, tooling, materials, and tolerances.
  • Ability to read blueprints and interpret GD&T.
  • Proficiency using calipers, micrometers, gauges, and other precision measuring equipment.
  • Experience with Fanuc, Haas, Mazak, Siemens, or similar controls preferred.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Commitment to workplace safety and quality standards.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally.
  • Manual dexterity and ability to safely operate manufacturing equipment.

Work Environment

This position operates in a manufacturing environment with exposure to heat, machine noise, metal shavings, lubricants, and moving mechanical parts. Proper PPE and safety procedures are required at all times.

You should be proficient in:

  • CNC Machine Setup & Changeover
  • Advanced Inspection & Gauge Measurement
  • Machine Setups for Production Runs
