How much do metagenomics jobs pay per year?

As of Jul 13, 2026, the average yearly pay for metagenomics in the United States is $139,887.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $121,500.00 and $157,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Metagenomics position, and why are they important?

To thrive in a Metagenomics role, you need a strong background in molecular biology, bioinformatics, microbial ecology, and data analysis, often supported by an advanced degree in a relevant field. Familiarity with sequencing technologies, data processing pipelines (such as QIIME, Mothur, or MetaPhlAn), and programming languages like Python or R is typically required. Critical thinking, collaboration, and strong communication skills enable effective teamwork and the translation of complex scientific data into actionable insights. These competencies are vital for producing high-quality research, driving innovation, and contributing to multidisciplinary scientific projects.

What is a Metagenomics job?

A metagenomics job involves analyzing genetic material recovered directly from environmental samples to study microbial communities. Professionals in this field use sequencing technologies and bioinformatics tools to identify and characterize microorganisms, their functions, and interactions. These roles are commonly found in research institutions, biotechnology firms, healthcare, and environmental science organizations. Responsibilities may include data processing, genome assembly, functional annotation, and interpreting microbial diversity.

What are typical daily responsibilities for someone working in a Metagenomics position?

Professionals in Metagenomics typically spend their days planning and executing complex experiments, extracting and sequencing DNA from environmental samples, and analyzing large datasets using specialized bioinformatics tools. They often collaborate closely with microbiologists, computational scientists, and environmental specialists to interpret results and design follow-up studies. Documentation of findings, preparing research reports, and sometimes presenting at scientific meetings or conferences are regular parts of the job. This role offers a dynamic blend of laboratory work, computational analysis, and teamwork within a rapidly advancing scientific field.
