Metabolic Engineering information
What is metabolic engineering?
A Metabolic Engineering job involves modifying and optimizing the metabolic pathways of microorganisms or cells to improve the production of valuable chemicals, biofuels, pharmaceuticals, or other bioproducts. Professionals in this field use synthetic biology, genetic engineering, and computational modeling to enhance biological systems for industrial or medical applications. They work in biotechnology companies, research institutions, or pharmaceutical firms, often collaborating with biologists, chemists, and engineers.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in metabolic engineering?
To thrive in Metabolic Engineering, you need a solid background in biochemistry, molecular biology, and genetic engineering, typically supported by an advanced degree in a related field. Familiarity with analytical instruments (HPLC, GC-MS), laboratory automation systems, and software for metabolic modeling (such as MATLAB or COBRA Toolbox) is highly beneficial. Strong problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and excellent communication help in effectively collaborating and translating scientific findings into practical applications. These combined skills are essential for driving innovative research and successful project outcomes in a multidisciplinary environment.
What are some common challenges faced by metabolic engineers in their daily work?
Metabolic engineers often encounter challenges such as optimizing microbial strains for desired product yield, troubleshooting unexpected metabolic bottlenecks, and adapting experiments in response to variable biological systems. Balancing benchwork with data analysis and documentation requires strong organizational skills and attention to detail. Working closely with teams in synthetic biology, fermentation, and process optimization is common, so communication and collaboration are key. Addressing these challenges is a core part of the role and provides valuable hands-on experience while fostering professional growth in the field.

Job description
Position Summary
As a Lead Metabolic Technician, you will serve as the expert and primary provider of Active and Resting Metabolic Assessments (AMA & RMA) in the club, helping members understand and improve their cardiovascular fitness through science-backed assessment and conditioning protocols. In this leadership role, you'll mentor other technicians and trainers in the proper delivery of metabolic assessments, uphold the highest standards of service, and contribute to the growth of heart-rate-based coaching throughout the club. This role requires strong knowledge of physiology, program design, and a passion for education and member experience.
Job Duties/Responsibilities
- Conduct Metabolic Assessments: Deliver AMA and RMA appointments, interpret assessment data, explain heart rate zone results, and develop personalized 4-6 week conditioning programs for each participant.
- Program Promotion and Member Engagement: Serve as the club's subject matter expert in heart-rate based conditioning. Collaborate with Personal Trainers and other fitness professionals to drive AMA engagement and educate members on the benefits of zone-based training.
- Team Mentorship and Training: Guide and support other Metabolic Technicians and Trainers in understanding and delivering AMA services. Assist in training new technicians and ensure consistency in assessment protocols across the team.
- Equipment and Technology Oversight: Maintain AMA equipment functionality, monitor mask inventory, and ensure accurate calibration. Collaborate with PT Leader to resolve maintenance needs promptly.
- Administrative Duties and Communication: Track appointment completions, maintain accurate member records, and communicate findings to trainers and other relevant team members.
- Ongoing Learning and Development: Engage in required and elective trainings to remain current in heart rate training, aerobic development, and member programming strategies.
Minimum Required Qualifications
Education:
- High School Diploma or GED
Years of Experience:
- 6+ months experience delivering Active Metabolic Assessments or similar cardio-based assessments
- 1+ year experience as a Personal Trainer, Small Group Coach, or Studio Instructor
- Comfortable with basic data interpretation and exercise physiology principles
Licenses / Certifications / Registrations:
- Certified Personal Trainer
