Mes Controls Engineer information

What is the difference between Mes Controls Engineer vs Automation Engineer?

AspectMes Controls EngineerAutomation Engineer
CredentialsTypically requires a degree in engineering, PLC certifications, and knowledge of MES systemsRequires a degree in engineering or computer science, PLC and robotics certifications
Work EnvironmentManufacturing plants, focusing on MES system integration and controlFactories, focusing on automation system design and implementation
Industry UsageUsed in manufacturing to manage production data and workflowsUsed across industries to automate machinery and processes

The Mes Controls Engineer primarily focuses on integrating and managing Manufacturing Execution Systems within production environments, ensuring data flow and process control. In contrast, the Automation Engineer designs and implements automation solutions, including robotics and control systems. Both roles require technical skills and work in manufacturing settings, but their core responsibilities differ in scope and focus.

What are MES Controls Engineers?

MES Controls Engineers are professionals who design, implement, and maintain Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES) and their integration with industrial control systems. They bridge the gap between production-floor equipment and higher-level business systems, ensuring seamless data flow and process automation. Their responsibilities include configuring MES software, developing interfaces with PLCs and SCADA systems, troubleshooting, and optimizing manufacturing processes for efficiency and quality. MES Controls Engineers play a crucial role in digital manufacturing and Industry 4.0 initiatives.

What are some common challenges faced by MES Controls Engineers when integrating new manufacturing equipment with existing MES systems?

MES Controls Engineers often encounter challenges such as ensuring compatibility between new equipment and legacy MES platforms, managing data consistency, and minimizing production downtime during integration. They must carefully coordinate with IT, production, and automation teams to map control logic and data flows accurately. Troubleshooting unexpected communication issues and aligning equipment protocols with MES requirements are also typical hurdles. Effective planning, thorough testing, and clear cross-functional communication help mitigate these challenges and ensure smooth system integration.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a MES Controls Engineer, and why are they important?

To excel as a MES Controls Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, automation, and manufacturing processes, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES), PLC programming, SCADA, and certifications like Siemens or Rockwell Automation are highly valuable. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are essential soft skills for collaborating with cross-functional teams and troubleshooting complex systems. These competencies are critical to ensuring seamless integration, efficiency, and reliability in automated manufacturing environments.

Job description

MES Controls Engineer

North Point Technology is seeking an experienced MES Controls Engineer to support manufacturing operations in a high-volume discrete manufacturing environment. This role focuses on Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES), PLC integration, real-time production execution, and automation system reliability. The ideal candidate will work closely with engineering, operations, and production teams to support and optimize MES-driven manufacturing processes.

Responsibilities:

Support MES-to-PLC integrations during system launches, production ramp-ups, and ongoing manufacturing operations.

Configure, establish, and maintain communications between MES and PLC systems.

Integrate MES template routines and user-defined data types (UDTs) into PLC programs.

Create, modify, and maintain PLC tags and logic required to support MES transactions and production reporting.

Collaborate with Process Engineers and MES teams to ensure successful integration of manufacturing processes.

Document MES-related PLC modifications, troubleshooting activities, and production support efforts.

Troubleshoot PLC, HMI, and industrial network issues impacting MES functionality and production execution.

Support the accuracy and integrity of real-time production reporting and manufacturing data.

Assist in resolving production issues affecting throughput, efficiency, quality, and system performance.

Partner with production supervisors, operators, and engineering teams to support effective manufacturing workflows.

Support MES-based quality validation and enforcement processes.

Maintain and manage part numbers, product structures, and production data within the MES environment.

Assist with audits, investigations, root cause analysis, and manufacturing data requests.

Identify opportunities to improve MES functionality, automation performance, and manufacturing processes.

Support MES enhancements, software updates, system upgrades, and new production rollouts.

Requirements/Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Automation, Manufacturing, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related technical discipline.

Experience working with Allen-Bradley/Rockwell and Siemens PLC and HMI platforms.

Strong PLC programming, troubleshooting, and diagnostic skills.

Experience supporting manufacturing automation and industrial control systems.

Knowledge of industrial networking and plant-floor communication protocols.

Ability to analyze and resolve complex production and system integration issues.

Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively with engineering, operations, and production teams.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience supporting Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES) in a production environment.

Experience integrating ERP, MES, and PLC systems.

Knowledge of discrete manufacturing processes.

Experience supporting system implementations, upgrades, and production launches.

Familiarity with production reporting, manufacturing data collection, and quality management systems.

Experience with continuous improvement initiatives and manufacturing process optimization.
