What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a MES Application Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a MES Application Engineer, you need a solid background in computer science or engineering, experience with manufacturing processes, and knowledge of Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES) such as Siemens Opcenter or Rockwell FactoryTalk. Familiarity with programming languages (e.g., SQL, Java), database management, and system integration tools is often required, along with relevant certifications. Strong problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and project management skills help you collaborate with cross-functional teams and address client needs. These competencies ensure MES solutions are effectively implemented, optimized, and maintained to support efficient manufacturing operations.

What are some common challenges MES Application Engineers face when integrating MES solutions with existing manufacturing systems?

MES Application Engineers often encounter challenges when integrating Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES) with legacy equipment and diverse software platforms. Ensuring seamless data flow between the MES and systems like ERP or SCADA can require custom interfaces and thorough testing. Additionally, aligning the MES solution with unique production processes and minimizing downtime during implementation are frequent concerns. Strong collaboration with IT, production, and engineering teams is essential to address these integration hurdles effectively.

What is the difference between Mes Application Engineer vs Manufacturing Engineer?

AspectMes Application EngineerManufacturing Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Engineering, knowledge of MES systemsBachelor's in Mechanical, Industrial, or Manufacturing Engineering
Work EnvironmentSoftware-focused, working with MES platforms and production teamsFactory floor, process optimization, equipment and workflow design
Employer & Industry UsageManufacturing companies implementing MES solutionsManufacturing plants across various industries
Common Search & ComparisonYesYes

The Mes Application Engineer primarily focuses on implementing and supporting Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES) to optimize production processes. In contrast, Manufacturing Engineers concentrate on designing, improving, and maintaining manufacturing processes and equipment. While both roles work within manufacturing environments, the Mes Application Engineer is more software and system-oriented, whereas the Manufacturing Engineer emphasizes process and equipment optimization.

What is a MES Application Engineer?

A MES (Manufacturing Execution System) Application Engineer is a professional who designs, implements, and maintains MES software solutions for manufacturing operations. They bridge the gap between production floor systems and enterprise-level software, ensuring real-time monitoring, data collection, and process optimization. Their role typically involves configuring MES applications, integrating them with other systems like ERP, troubleshooting issues, and supporting ongoing improvements for manufacturing efficiency and quality. MES Application Engineers often work closely with IT, operations, and engineering teams to meet production goals and compliance requirements.

Job Summary
Logical Systems, Inc. (LSI) is seeking a highly technical MES Solutions Architect to design, build, integrate, and support advanced Manufacturing Execution Systems across industrial and regulated manufacturing environments. This role bridges OT and IT, combining plant-floor automation expertise (PLC, SCADA, Historians) with enterprise application integration (ERP, QMS, LIMS, analytics) to deliver real-time, scalable MES architectures.
The ideal candidate can build MES applications from the ground up, understands deterministic shop-floor communication, and can design event-driven, ISA-95 aligned systems that support production execution, traceability, quality, and operational intelligence. Experience developing validation document stacks (URS/FRS/FS/DDS/IQ/OQ/PQ) is a significant plus.
Key Responsibilities
MES Application Development
• Design, develop, configure, and maintain MES applications supporting production execution, routing, WIP, material management, genealogy, traceability, OEE, downtime, SPC/SQC, quality, batch/recipe management, and eBR.
• Develop MES runtimes and microservices using C#, .NET Core, Java, or Python.
OT-IT Integration & Industrial Connectivity
• Integrate MES with PLCs, DCS, SCADA, Historians, CMMS, LIMS, and ERP systems.
• Develop interfaces using OPC UA/DA, MQTT, Kafka, REST, gRPC, SQL, ETL pipelines, Unified Namespace (UNS).
• Engineer deterministic store-and-forward and guaranteed-delivery messaging patterns.
Data Modeling & Architecture
• Develop ISA-95 and/or ISA-88 aligned data models.
• Build and optimize SQL Server, PostgreSQL, or Oracle schemas.

• Support FAT, SAT, commissioning, recipe validation, and plant-floor go-lives.
• Troubleshoot across the entire MES stack (PLC → SCADA → Messaging → MES → DB → ERP).
• Contribute to or oversee validation deliverables under GAMP5/CSA.
Security & Compliance
• Implement cybersecurity controls aligned with ISA/IEC 62443.
• Support compliance with GxP, 21 CFR Part 11, and regulated industry requirements when applicable.
Required Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Information Systems, or equivalent experience.
• 5+ years of hands-on MES or manufacturing system development.
• Strong development experience with C#, .NET, Java, Python, SQL.
