Job Summary

Sports Coaches will assume a crucial role in devising, crafting, and executing a secure and captivating sports program for students across various locations within the Merlo Gym. They will be tasked with organizing and delivering training sessions for cohorts of student-athletes, incorporating a mix of sports and educational elements to enhance individual and team capabilities, leadership qualities, communication proficiencies, and socio-emotional skills. Moreover, they will cultivate an atmosphere of encouragement and assistance, ensuring each student-athlete receives ample support.

Essential Functions

Activity Planning and Implementation

  • Develop and implement comprehensive training programs tailored to the needs and skill levels of student-athletes 1st-12th grade.
  • Maintain equipment and ensure a safe and inclusive environment for all participants.
  • Collaborate with other coaches, staff members, and stakeholders to ensure a cohesive and effective coaching approach.
  • Implement activities that promote students' social-emotional growth, including confidence-building exercises and positive communication.
  • Teach and reinforce fundamental sports skills and techniques in both traditional and non-traditional sports.

Coaching and Supervision

  • Provide individualized coaching and feedback to athletes to help them improve their performance.
  • Analyze athletes' strengths and weaknesses to identify areas for improvement and development.
  • Prepare athletes for competitions by developing game plans, strategies, and rules of the game.
  • Motivate and inspire athletes to reach their full potential and achieve their goals.
  • Maintain a safe and positive training environment that promotes sportsmanship, respect, and teamwork.

Behavior Management

  • Set clear expectations for behavior and conduct within the program, promoting a positive and respectful atmosphere.
  • Implement appropriate disciplinary measures when necessary, following TCF program guidelines and protocols.
  • Foster a culture of inclusivity and diversity, promoting acceptance and understanding among students.
  • Implement a system of positive reinforcement to acknowledge and reward desired behaviors, including verbal praise, certificates, and tangible rewards.
  • Employ restorative practices that focus on repairing harm and restoring relationships in cases of conflicts or incidents, emphasizing accountability, empathy, and reconciliation.

Additional Responsibilities

Fulfill any other duties as assigned by the supervisor, recognizing that the role may evolve to include new tasks introduced by the company.

Job Qualifications

Minimum Knowledge/Experience/Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Negative TB test clearance
  • Must have 48 college units
  • Must Proficiency Exam and Paraprofessional certification
  • Must pass DOJ/FBI criminal background check.
  • High level of experience in respective sports
  • Must be punctual and reliable.
  • High energy, enthusiastic demeanor.
  • Must have experience working with student-athletes and a multi-sport background. Strong knowledge of traditional sports (e.g. soccer, basketball, baseball) and interest in non-traditional sports (e.g. Esports, Ultimate Frisbee, Badminton, Tennis, etc.).
  • Must be able to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Must be able to communicate openly in a professional manner with staff, students, parents, and community partners.
  • Understanding and knowledge of sports injury prevention to minimize risks during activities

License/Certification/Clearance *All training will be provided by TCF and must be completed as part of pre-employment requirements.

  • Sexual Harassment Training Certificate *required
  • Mandated Reporter Training Certificate *required.
  • First aid and CPR Certification *preferred

Physical Demands

  • Must have sufficient strength, agility, and mobility to perform essential functions of position and to safely supervise children’s activities including the ability to occasionally lift up to 25 lbs.
  • Must be fit for frequent bending and standing.
