Job description

Radiologic Technologist

This job supports Mercy's philosophy of patient centered care by performing general diagnostic radiographic procedures to any part of the human body. This position also processes lab tests, performs venipuncture, and where applicable, maintains all requirements of a CLIA-approved lab.

Job Duties/Essential Functions
  • Utilizes EPIC system's Admissions and Radiology Module to register patients, close orders, enter repeat test information and where applicable, order tests.
  • Identifies each patient and reviews each patient's requisition for consistency of examination ordered with clinical diagnosis.
  • Prepares and orders images and obtains previous films by use of the PACS-Isite system.
  • Identifies anatomical orientation and ensures proper film identification on all images.
  • Reviews each exam for technical accuracy.
  • Initiates applicable incident reports by the end of the shift and reports incomplete and incorrect examinations to ensure the proper patient charge and continuity of patient care.
  • Adheres to all phlebotomy protocols by selecting and performing the appropriate phlebotomy procedures for pediatric, adult and geriatric patients.
  • Follows specimen collection, labeling and handling procedures to include verifying patients' names before collecting specimens.
  • Performs basic lab tests according to accepted procedures. This includes ensuring test requests contain required information and correspond with correct specimens.
  • Documents all lab results in accordance with clinic procedures and distributes reports to appropriate physician staff.
  • Demonstrates competency in use of all lab equipment/machines including performing preventive maintenance, troubleshooting and completing proficiency testing.
  • Performs quality assurance checks and maintains documentation in accordance with CLIA guidelines as applicable.
  • Assists in orientation and training of students and new employees in phlebotomy and/or lab procedures and processes.
  • Rooms and prepares patient for examination, as applicable. This includes histories, vitals, reason for visit, presenting symptoms and current medication list.
  • Monitors, orders and completes inventory for all lab supplies, as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of all general radiographer policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrated competence with film and digital processing.
  • Ability to perform venipuncture and laboratory procedures up to and including moderately complex labs.
Professional Experience
  • General diagnostic x-ray experience preferred. Laboratory experience, to include venipuncture and performing moderately complex laboratory procedures preferred.
Education
  • Current American Registry of Radiologic Technologist Certification Required. Associate's degree in radiologic technology preferred.
Licensure, Certification, Registration
  • Iowa Permit to Practice Radiography required.
  • Registration with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) required.
  • Current certification in Basic Life Support, in accordance with the American Heart Association required.
  • Iowa Dependent Adult Abuse/Iowa Child Abuse Mandatory Reporter training required. Employee must submit certification of completed training to Human Resources prior to start or transfer date.
