What is an MEP Project Manager?

MEP Project Managers are professionals who oversee the planning, coordination, and execution of Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing (MEP) systems in construction projects. They are responsible for managing teams, budgets, schedules, and ensuring that all MEP systems are installed and functioning according to project specifications and codes. Their role bridges the gap between design, engineering, and construction, ensuring seamless integration of these critical systems. MEP Project Managers work closely with architects, engineers, contractors, and clients to deliver successful building projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an MEP Project Manager?

To thrive as an MEP Project Manager, you need a solid background in mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems, typically with a degree in engineering or construction management. Familiarity with project management software like MS Project or Primavera, as well as CAD and BIM tools, and certifications such as PMP or LEED, are highly valued. Strong leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills set top candidates apart in coordinating diverse teams and stakeholders. These skills ensure that complex building projects are completed efficiently, safely, and to specification.

What are some common challenges MEP Project Managers face when coordinating multidisciplinary teams on complex construction projects?

MEP Project Managers often encounter challenges in aligning mechanical, electrical, and plumbing teams to meet overlapping project milestones. Effective coordination requires clear communication, conflict resolution skills, and a strong understanding of each discipline's timelines and dependencies. Additionally, managing changes in design, addressing site constraints, and ensuring compliance with safety and quality standards can add complexity to the role. Proactive planning and regular cross-discipline meetings are key strategies for overcoming these hurdles and delivering successful project outcomes.

ABOUT THE ROLE:

Weโ€™re seeking an experienced Construction Project Manager with a strong engineering background to lead mission-critical build efforts for our data center in Memphis, Tennessee. As a key onโ€‘site leader, youโ€™ll bring technical credibility, engineering expertise, and steady leadership to fastโ€‘paced, highโ€‘impact projects. This is a fullโ€‘time, onsite role based in Memphis, Tennessee, with relocation required depending on additional construction locations within the US.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Act as the senior construction representative for the Memphis data center, managing relationships with contractors, partners, and internal stakeholders.
  • Oversee endโ€‘toโ€‘end project execution, from preโ€‘construction and site development through commissioning and handover.
  • Coordinate multiple vendors and trade partners, ensuring seamless communication between field teams, engineering disciplines, and technical stakeholders.
  • Proactively identify and mitigate risks to ensure highโ€‘quality delivery, safety, schedule adherence, and operational readiness.
  • Drive project progress, resolving roadblocks and keeping complex, multiโ€‘phase timelines on track.
  • Create and align construction schedules and deliverables with xAIโ€™s broader infrastructure and AI supercomputing goals through crossโ€‘functional collaboration.
  • Partner with engineering and commissioning teams to guide technical integration and resolve issues efficiently.
  • Deliver regular updates using wellโ€‘designed KPIs, dashboards, and reports for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ensure the project meets technical, quality, and engineering standards outlined in the base design.
  • Perform quantity takeโ€‘offs, field verifications, and progress monitoring to support accurate forecasting and reporting.
  • Manage change orders, identifying valueโ€‘engineered solutions to minimize unnecessary changes and control costs.
  • Lead site safety initiatives, fostering a consistent and effective safety culture.
  • Adapt to evolving needs, supporting crossโ€‘functional partners as required, regardless of original job scope.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, or related Engineering discipline (or equivalent experience).
  • 5+ years of experience managing largeโ€‘scale construction projects, with a focus on data centers, missionโ€‘critical facilities, or industrial infrastructure.
  • Strong engineering background with proven ability to interpret drawings, specifications, and technical requirements across multiple disciplines.
  • Demonstrated success leading onโ€‘site construction teams with authority and building trust with vendors, partners, and technical stakeholders.
  • Experience managing large programs involving multiple vendors, dynamic priorities, and complex coordination.
  • Excellent communication skills across disciplines, from fieldโ€‘level updates to technical escalations with engineering teams.
  • Thrives in solving complex, realโ€‘time problems with adaptability, composure, and dataโ€‘driven decision making.
  • Ability to travel as needed.
PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Previous experience in data center or hyperscale construction projects.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license or advanced engineering credentials.
  • Familiarity with Memphis/Shelby County building codes, regulations, and permitting processes.
  • Experience with commissioning, MEP systems, structural works, or site development for technical facilities.
  • Strong problemโ€‘solving skills and ability to handle complex construction and engineering challenges.
  • Proficiency with construction management tools (Procore, Primavera P6, Bluebeam, etc.).
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Position is subject to preโ€‘employment drug and random drug and alcohol testing.
  • Position is subject to preโ€‘employment and annual postโ€‘employment background checks.
  • Comfortable working in an environment requiring exposure to noise and construction.
  • Available to work evenings and weekends, as the schedule varies depending on site operational needs; flexibility is required.
  • Ability to lift 25+ pounds.
