What is a MEMS integration engineer?

A MEMS Integration Engineer is a professional who specializes in the design, development, and integration of Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) into larger electronic devices or systems. They work on combining tiny mechanical and electrical components at the microscale to create sensors, actuators, and other MEMS-based devices. Their role often involves collaborating with design, fabrication, and testing teams to ensure MEMS devices function correctly within the intended application. MEMS Integration Engineers also troubleshoot integration issues and optimize performance for mass production.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a MEMS integration engineer?

To thrive as a MEMS Integration Engineer, you need a strong background in microfabrication, semiconductor physics, and materials science, often supported by a degree in electrical engineering, physics, or a related field. Experience with CAD tools, cleanroom processes, and characterization equipment, as well as familiarity with industry standards, is typically required. Problem-solving ability, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for collaborating across multidisciplinary teams and addressing complex integration challenges. These skills ensure reliable MEMS device performance, efficient project execution, and successful product development.

What are some common challenges faced by MEMS integration engineers during cross-disciplinary collaboration?

MEMS Integration Engineers frequently work with teams across mechanical, electrical, and software engineering disciplines, which can lead to challenges in aligning design requirements, timelines, and communication styles. Successfully integrating MEMS devices often requires balancing competing priorities, such as packaging constraints and interface compatibility. Building strong relationships with colleagues in different specialties and maintaining clear, detailed documentation are key to overcoming these hurdles and ensuring seamless integration throughout the product lifecycle.

Job description

HRL Laboratories pioneers the next frontiers of physical and information science. Delivering transformative technologies in automotive, aerospace and defense, HRL advances the critical missions of its customers to help them remove limitations and create competitive advantage. HRL then transitions the work back to customers โ€“ ready for real-world application. For more than 70 years, HRLโ€™s rich portfolio of scientific discoveries and engineering innovations continues to build on each other โ€” often in unexpected, profound and far-reaching ways. As a private company owned jointly by Boeing and GM, HRL prioritizes purpose over profit, significantly advancing the state of the art.

HRL Laboratories advances critical structural and functional materials and semiconductor devices that enable precision navigation, quantum technologies and extreme-environment performance. With expertise from design through deployment, we deliver scalable, high-performance solutions that transform our customersโ€™ missions. Our work leverages digital manufacturing and scalable microfabrication techniques to meet tomorrowโ€™s toughest challenges

HRL's compact, high-performance MEMS IMUs are revolutionizing navigation systems by delivering reliable guidance in GPS-degraded environments. Engineered with navigation-grade precision, these IMUs provide a cost-effective and scalable solution for automotive, aerospace, and other demanding applications where traditional GPS reliance falls short. These innovations aim to deliver a first-of-its-kind navigation-grade component that combines reliability, precision, and affordability. By offering a viable alternative to traditional IMUs, HRL's MEMS technology is advancing the capabilities of autonomous systems and enabling precise navigation in challenging environments.
