Membrane Engineer information

What is the difference between Membrane Engineer vs Process Engineer?

AspectMembrane EngineerProcess Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Chemical, Materials Science, or Mechanical Engineering; certifications varyBachelor's or Master's in Chemical, Mechanical, or Industrial Engineering; similar certifications
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, manufacturing plants, R&D facilitiesManufacturing plants, industrial facilities, R&D labs
Industry UsageWater treatment, desalination, gas separation, biomedical applicationsOil & gas, chemical processing, manufacturing, energy sectors

Membrane Engineers focus on designing and developing membrane technologies for separation processes, while Process Engineers optimize and manage overall manufacturing processes. Both roles require similar educational backgrounds and often work in overlapping environments, but their core responsibilities differ in scope and application.

What are some common challenges Membrane Engineers face when scaling up from lab-scale to industrial-scale membrane processes?

Membrane Engineers often encounter challenges related to membrane fouling, maintaining consistent performance, and ensuring cost-effective operation when scaling up from laboratory to industrial settings. Issues such as variations in feed water quality, larger system hydraulics, and the need for robust cleaning protocols become more pronounced at scale. Successful engineers collaborate closely with process engineers, maintenance teams, and quality control to troubleshoot and optimize systems for reliability and efficiency. Being proactive in addressing these challenges is key to the role and can lead to significant process improvements.

What are membrane engineers?

Membrane engineers are professionals who design, develop, and optimize membrane-based systems for applications such as water purification, gas separation, and chemical processing. They work with various membrane materials and processes to achieve efficient separation of substances at the molecular or ionic level. Membrane engineers often collaborate with chemists, material scientists, and process engineers to improve membrane performance and durability. Their expertise is crucial in industries like wastewater treatment, pharmaceuticals, food processing, and energy.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Membrane Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Membrane Engineer, you need a strong background in chemical engineering, materials science, or environmental engineering, often supported by a relevant degree and experience in membrane technology. Familiarity with simulation software (such as COMSOL Multiphysics), laboratory instrumentation, and industry standards or certifications like ISO 9001 is highly valuable. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills help set candidates apart in this role. These competencies enable the development, optimization, and implementation of advanced membrane systems essential for water treatment, gas separation, and sustainable industrial processes.

Job description

ABOUT YOU

BlueWTR is hiring a Senior Process Engineer/Design PM to lead process design and technical delivery on industrial water and wastewater projects across hyperscale data center, RNG/biogas, semiconductor, advanced manufacturing, and food & beverage markets. You'll own basis-of-design through commissioning on projects ranging from greenfield UPW systems to multi-hundred-MW cooling and reuse infrastructure, working inside a design-build structure with the full backing of ARCO/Murray's national platform.

This is a senior, client-facing role with ownership over process scope, deliverables, and technical decisions.

  • Location: Denver or Chicago
  • Travel: 20% domestically

WHAT WE CAN OFFER YOU

Expected compensation range: $135K - $175K + Bonus.  This is an approximate range; actual salary may be higher or lower depending on your experience and skillset.

  • Industry-leading performance-based bonus program
  • Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP)
  • Traditional and Roth 401(k)
  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • HSA and FSA options
  • Paid parental leave
  • Paid sabbatical and volunteer leave
  • Tuition reimbursement
  • Up to $28,000 in scholarships per child
  • 100% charitable match
  • Inclusive, ownership-driven workplace culture

A DAY IN THE LIFE
  • Lead process design on assigned industrial water and wastewater projects; membrane (UF/NF/RO), biological, chemical, solids handling, and reuse, from FEL through commissioning.
  • Own basis-of-design, mass balances, hydraulic profiles, PFDs, P&IDs, equipment layouts, and control narratives as primary author and approver.
  • Serve as the senior technical interface for clients, consulting engineers, and design-build partners; defend process decisions and translate them into executable scope.
  • Drive equipment selection, OEM evaluations, technical procurement, and submittal reviews.
  • Direct startup, commissioning, troubleshooting, and optimization in coordination with controls integrators and field teams.
  • Mentor junior engineers and review their deliverables; raise the technical bar across the process group.
  • Support business development through proposal input, scoping calls, and regional presence at industry events.

NECESSARY QUALIFICATIONS
  • 7–10 years in industrial water/wastewater process engineering or design-build process delivery.
  • Demonstrated ownership of PFDs, P&IDs, hydraulic profiles, mass balances, and basis-of-design packages on completed projects.
  • Hands-on experience with membrane systems (UF/NF/RO), biological treatment, chemical feed, and solids handling.
  • Strong client-facing communication; able to lead technical discussions with sophisticated industrial owners and their reps.
  • Experience inside design-build or EPC delivery, comfortable with cost, schedule, and constructability pressure on process decisions.
  • BS in Chemical, Environmental, or related engineering discipline.

Preferred Qualifications

  • PE license.
  • Direct project experience in hyperscale data center cooling, RNG/biogas, semiconductor UPW, or food & beverage process water.
  • Working knowledge of industrial controls, PLC/SCADA architecture, instrumentation, and process automation handoffs.
  • NPDES permitting and industrial discharge compliance experience.
  • Prior experience mentoring or formally managing other engineers.
