The Environmental Service Associate performs a variety of general cleaning tasks to maintain offices, hallways, restrooms, and other assigned areas.

NMAAM is the only museum dedicated to preserving the legacy and celebrating the accomplishments of the many music genres created, influenced, or inspired by African Americans. The Museum will share the story of the American Soundtrack, integrating history and interactive technology to bring the musical heroes of the past into the present. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Dusts furniture, woodwork, equipment, and dust mops floors. 
  • Polishes and cleans fixtures in utility rooms and bathrooms. Performs general cleaning duties.  Empties and cleans ashtrays and trashcans.  Cleans sinks commodes, mirrors, walls, and fixtures.   Replenishes restroom supplies i.e. towels, tissues and soap.  Cleans window ills; may wash lower-level windows.  Cleans water fountains.  Cleans vents, fans and other equipment using vacuum machines.
  • May operate mechanical floor cleaners, sweeps and/or vacuums floors, damp mops and waxes stairs, corridors, floors, and public areas. May occasionally strip floors.
  • Gathers and disposes of trash and waste materials. Cleans and disinfects all fixtures, floors, mirrors, windows, doors, and walls of bathroom.

Education and Experience:

  • Less than high school education.  Must be able to read and write.  Prior housekeeping experience is preferred.
  • Basic knowledge of cleaning methods and procedures.
  • Knowledge of materials and equipment used in custodial work.
  • Ability to follow simple oral instructions.
  • Ability to perform moderate manual labor.
  • Ability to identify cleaning solutions and compounds.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Supports the mission, vision, and strategic goals of NMAAM to serve both internal and external customers.
  • Conducts self in a professional manner; maintains appropriate professional appearance.
  • Follows and supports policies and procedures of NMAAM.
  • Participates as a team member utilizing a collaborative style to achieve mutual goals.

All Staff Duties:

  • Follows and supports policies and procedures of NMAAM.
  • Actively seeks to learn the history of NMAAM.
  • Supports and promotes the museum’s mission.
  • Attend staff meetings.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
