Description:
BASIC PURPOSE OF THE JOB
Under the general supervision of the Primary Care Director, oversees and maintains Point Of Care Testing (waived testing) performed throughout the Ambulatory setting, including Urgent Care locations. This includes but is not limited to the review of quality control with corrective action, procedure development/review, instrumentation assessment/maintenance, and research of test methodologies. Assists with communication of test results to patients, physicians, and employees and assists with proficiency programs. Follows all laboratory, ambulatory and hospital policies and procedures related to point-of-care testing, specimen collections, quality control, result verifications, reporting procedures, infection control, maintenance, lab and public safety, etc. Performs other duties as assigned.

JOB REQUIREMENTS
Supervisory Responsibilities: NO
Minimum Education: Bachelor’s Degree Required
Degree: Degree in Medical Technology or Medical Laboratory Science from an accredited college or certificate as a Medical Technologist by HEW examination
License/Certification Required: Certification as MLS or MT by ASCP, AMT or AAB
Minimum Work Experience: 2-4 years medical laboratory experience is required. Related laboratory experience preferred
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Strong organizational skills
- Self-motivator and able to make independent decisions
- Knowledge of laboratory testing and specimen collection requirements
- Knowledge of point of care testing preferred
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Working under the direction of the Primary Care Director, performs duties effectively: Oversees all aspects of point-of-care testing in the Ambulatory setting, including primary care, specialty care and urgent care locations. Trains clinical staff in the operation and implementation of testing and equipment adhering to manufacturer’s procedures and accrediting agency, state and federal regulations. Monitors and maintains equipment to ensure quality standards are met. Audits and closely monitors all incident reports, quality control reports, and operator/testing concerns.
- Performs accurate and appropriate testing of specimens received in the laboratory, according to established laboratory protocol and procedures: Investigates and documents problems with unacceptable specimens. Organizes workload for maximum efficiency in order to complete tests being performed. Accurately performs tests as requested on specimens received.
- Reports test results in a timely manner and according to established laboratory protocol and procedures: Reports results for stats, abnormals, critical values, and other categories of special requests as defined by laboratory and ambulatory policy. Documents special handling required for test results that meet outlying (established) criteria.
- Follows established procedures for laboratory quality control and reports discrepancies to the appropriate supervisor: Performs appropriate quality control for the test procedure. Accurately analyzes and evaluates QC results obtained before accepting and reporting patient test results. Record results obtained for quality control testing as defined in the test procedure.
- Oversees performance of daily, weekly, monthly or as needed, maintenance on instruments and equipment as appropriate.
- Performs and documents calibration of equipment as required.
- Troubleshoots instruments, equipment, reagents, and patient specimens when problems occur. Notifies the supervisor if unable to solve the problem.
- Completes work assignments on time/readily accepts assignments. Produces consistent quality results while maintaining a large quantity of work.
- Meets deadlines and turn-around times for test results, preventative maintenance.
- Demonstrates respect and regard for the dignity of all patients, families, visitors, and fellow employees to ensure a professional, responsible, and courteous environment.
- Complies with established laboratory, ambulatory and hospital policies for universal precautions and safety procedures.
- Assures standards are met related to calibrations, documentation, etc.
- Demonstrates reliability and speed in reporting, spec processing, calibrations, etc.
- Effectively manages technical aspects of work areas.
- Promotes effective working relations and works effectively as part of a department/unit team inter- and intra-departmentally to facilitate the department’s/unit’s ability to meet its goals and objectives.
- Foster and encourage principles of C/FCC to include: communication, education, orientation, and implementation of C/FCC actions and projects.
- Creates a productive work environment as related to expectations, interruptions, schedules, etc. Willingly accepts any other assignment that may be requested.
- Minimizes costs in supplies, time and training to produce test results by following established procedures and taking care to “do it right the first time”.
- Minimizes costs in equipment repairs, repeat work, QC, etc. by following established procedures and taking care to “do it right the first time”.
- Utilizes organizational resources and time respectfully and accountably.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS-Note: Reasonable accommodations may be made for individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of this position.
- Light lifting, pushing and pulling is required for 10-20 lbs occasionally, and frequent moving of objects of less than 10 lbs is required. Frequent sitting with some walking, standing, squatting, bending and reaching is required. Keyboard/computer use and/or repetitive motions may be required.
