Job description

Summary

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student‑loan payment reimbursement program. Applicants must meet specific eligibility requirements per VA policy and submit an EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval, award amount (up to $200,000), and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.

Duties

The successful candidate will serve as a Neurologist in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Veterans Health Administration (VHA), Atlanta VA Medical Center (VAMC) / VISN 7, within the Neuroscience Service Line (NSSL). Responsibilities include:

  • Provide direct patient care in both outpatient and inpatient settings, including clinical evaluation, treatment, and counseling of Veterans and their families.
  • Maintain quality and timeliness of services while ensuring compliance with standards and promoting customer satisfaction.
  • Perform administrative duties such as documentation of progress notes and consultation findings in an electronic medical record.
  • Manage patient workload and coordinate with physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and telehealth clinical technicians as needed.
  • Collaborate with other services within the facility.
Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP)

Recruitment/Relocation Incentive

Pay

Competitive salary with annual performance bonus and regular salary increases.

Requirements – Conditions of Employment
  • U.S. citizenship; non‑citizens may only be appointed when no qualified citizens are available.
  • All applicants for VA employment in a testing designated position must undergo a drug‑screening urinalysis prior to appointment; refusal results in denial.
  • Selective Service registration required for males born after 12/31/1959.
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English.
  • Subject to background/security investigation.
  • Completion of an online onboarding process with acceptable identification forms (including REAL ID compliance).
  • Pass a pre‑employment physical examination.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet basic and, if applicable, additional requirements listed below. Candidates who have not yet completed training or licensing requirements may be referred but cannot be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements
  • U.S. citizenship (non‑citizens may receive appointment only when no qualified citizens are available).
  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or equivalent (osteopathic medicine) from a school accredited in the year of completion.
  • Current, full, unrestricted medical license in a U.S. state, territory, or D.C.
  • Residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty program leading to board certification. Approved residencies include:
    1. ACGME or AOA accredited programs;
    2. One year of post‑medical‑school training followed by two years of independent practice in the U.S.;
    3. Non‑U.S. residency training followed by at least three years of U.S. independent practice related to the position.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
Preferred Experience

Board‑certified or board‑eligible neurologist.

Physical Requirements

Applicants must be physically and mentally capable of performing the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation, without hazard to themselves or others. Vision, hearing, and speech requirements may apply, and impairments may be compensated by prosthetic or mechanical aids.

Education Requirements

Doctor of Medicine (MD) or equivalent with accreditation as follows:

  1. Medical schools accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) for the year the degree was granted.
  2. Osteopathic medical schools approved by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) for the year the degree was granted.
  3. For foreign graduates not covered above, confirmation that the school meets (or met) ECFMG eligibility requirements for the year of graduation.
