Job description

Job Title: Microbiology & Molecular Biology - CFS Professorial Faculty - Medical Laboratory Science Program

Posting End Date: September 25, 2026

Position Start Date: September 1, 2027

Required Degree: Ph.D. in a discipline relating to biomedical sciences and current medical laboratory science (MLS) certification (ASCP BOC); B.S. degree in MLS is preferred. The required degree and certification must be completed by the position start date.

Experience: Previous work in settings specializing in clinical testing; demonstrated ability to teach MLS-aligned courses; evidence of an active research program adaptable to the mentoring of BYU undergraduate and graduate students; postdoctoral experience is preferred.

Duties/Expectations:The BYU Department of Microbiology and Molecular Biology (MMBIO) administers a specialized MLS program that prepares students to perform and interpret medical tests critical in the diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment of disease. We seek to fill a full-time professorial-track MLS faculty position. TEACHING (~50%): The faculty member in this role will be able to teach hands-on undergraduate courses in MLS-related areas such as clinical chemistry, medical microbiology, hematology, immunohematology, clinical parasitology, and molecular diagnostics, preparing students to be professionally certified and enter the MLS workforce. RESEARCH (~40%): The faculty member will carry out original research projects that involve undergraduate and graduate students; this research is expected to yield consistent publication in reputable peer-reviewed journals and prepare students for careers in science, medicine, or other aligned fields. CITIZENSHIP (~10%): The faculty member will dedicate substantial effort to committee work in any of several areas that support program offerings, student experiences, and faculty development. MMBIO faculty consistently reflect values in the statements (found below) on belonging, university mission alignment, and additional employee requirements. They are capable of and committed to teaching and mentoring students from diverse backgrounds and life experiences. Starting rank and salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Documents Required at the Time of Application: Application materials should include: (1) 1-page cover letter (an overarching summary of the applicant and motivation for applying); (2) 1-page teaching statement summarizing MLS subject competencies and vision for effectively facilitating student learning; (3) 1-page research and mentoring statement articulating a plan for rigorous, student-centered research; (4) 1-page BYU mission alignment statement (see instructions below); and (5) A current curriculum vitae that includes education, relevant experience and accomplishments, documentation of MLS (ASCP) certification, and the names and contact information of at least three professional references.
