What is a medical lab assistant?

Medical Lab Assistants are healthcare professionals who support laboratory technologists and technicians by preparing samples, conducting basic tests, and ensuring lab equipment is clean and functioning. They play a crucial role in the diagnosis and treatment of patients by handling specimens such as blood, urine, and tissue. Their responsibilities include labeling samples, recording data, and sometimes interacting with patients to collect samples. Medical Lab Assistants work in hospitals, clinics, research laboratories, and diagnostic centers, helping to ensure accurate and timely test results.

What does a medical lab assistant do?

As a medical lab assistant, you typically work in a hospital or clinical/medical laboratory. This role is slightly different than a lab tech position in that you have less responsibility. As a lab assistant, it’s your job to assist technologists and technicians with lab tests. Depending on the specific position, your duties may include preparing specimens, managing their storage, and keeping track of the results. Other everyday tasks involve keeping the lab equipment clean, maintaining an accurate inventory of supplies, and placing orders as needed. You may also have administrative duties, like billing and filing.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a medical lab assistant, and why are they important?

Attention to detail, organizational skills, and effective communication help ensure accurate results and smooth collaboration with healthcare teams. These skills and qualities are essential for maintaining high standards of laboratory accuracy, safety, and timely patient care.

What are some common challenges medical lab assistants face in their daily work, and how can they be managed?

Medical Lab Assistants often encounter challenges such as handling a high volume of specimens, maintaining accuracy under time pressure, and adhering to strict safety protocols. Managing these challenges involves strong organizational skills, effective communication with laboratory technologists and other healthcare staff, and diligent attention to detail. Many labs offer ongoing training and support to help assistants stay current with best practices and improve workflow efficiency, ensuring patient safety and reliable test results.

Job description

Job Title: Bilingual Medical Assistant & Phlebotomist (Full-Cycle Patient Coordinator)

Location: Tyler, Texas

Position Type: Full-Time | Long-Term Career Opportunity

Schedule: Consistent daytime hours (No overnights or weekend shifts)

Compensation: $20.00 – $22.50 / hour (Base) + Uncapped Package Sales Commissions & Performance Bonuses

About the Role:

We are seeking an experienced, proactive, and business-minded Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) with elite phlebotomy and IV skills to manage our end-to-end patient experience. In this role, you will take true ownership of clinical workflows, laboratory processing, patient care coordination, and treatment package consultations.

We are looking for a dedicated, long-term team member who operates with natural initiative, maintains high standards under pressure, and wants to grow financially as the clinic expands.

Key Responsibilities:

Clinical Intake & Procedural Excellence

·       Room patients efficiently, obtain precise vitals, update clinical history, and prepare electronic charts (NextGen) ahead of provider entry.

·       Prepare IV infusion setups, draw therapeutic medication injections, and assist with clinical, wellness, and aesthetic procedures within scope.

·       Prep treatment rooms, aesthetic devices, consumables, and coupling gels (e.g., VTone, FormaV), capture standardized clinical photography, and serve as a professional chaperone during intimate wellness treatments.

·       Act as a reliable provider-patient liaison by reinforcing discharge instructions, anticipating patient questions, and communicating clinical concerns promptly.

Phlebotomy & Specimen Management

·       Perform high-accuracy, comfortable blood draws and venous access across all patient demographics.

·       Manage complete in-house laboratory processing: centrifuge operation, temperature-specific handling (frozen, refrigerated, ambient), strict labeling, and courier pickup handoffs.

·       Proactively track pending lab results and route completed panels to the provider for immediate review.

Front-of-House, Sales & Coordination

·       Guide patients through the complete visit lifecycle: warm reception, intake, clinical care, checkout, billing, and re-booking.

·       Confidently educate patients on clinic offerings, present multi-service wellness/treatment packages, and close sales to meet clinic growth targets.

·       Manage high-volume incoming and outgoing calls with polished telephone etiquette, conducting diligent follow-ups and lead qualification.

Operational Integrity & Facility Standards

·       Sterilize instruments and sanitize treatment rooms in accordance with OSHA, HIPAA, and CLIA infection-control guidelines.

·       Maintain par levels for medical inventory, monitor medication expiration dates, track lot numbers, and notify leadership of low supplies before shortages impact care.

·       Proactively restock, organize, and reset exam rooms between visits without requiring reminders or supervision.

What We Are Looking For:

·       Bilingual Fluency: Fluent in English and Spanish (verbal and written) are required.

·       Clinical Mastery & Credentials: Active CMA/RMA and phlebotomy certification with 2+ years of hands-on experience in venipuncture, centrifuge processing, IV therapy, and medication injections.

·       Consultative Sales Drive: Demonstrated comfort discussing value-based medical/aesthetic packages and closing sales (background in medical aesthetics, wellness, or high-ticket retail is a plus).

·       High Emotional Maturity & Coachability: Direct, drama-free communicator who embraces constructive feedback as a tool for excellence, remains accountable, and leaves defensiveness at the door.

·       Proactive Ownership Mindset: A self-starter who steps in wherever needed, refuses the "that's not my job" mentality, and anticipates clinic flow during peak hours.

·       Professional Presence & Mobility: Polished grooming and communication standards; must hold a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation for local medical office outreach or clinic events.

The Person Who Will Thrive in This Role:

You will thrive at our clinic, if you naturally notice what needs to be done and take immediate action. You take pride in leaving the clinic better than you found it, stay composed when the schedule is demanding, and take personal satisfaction in protecting the patient experience while helping the business thrive.

What We Offer:

·       Competitive Earning Potential: Strong base hourly pay plus commission on every treatment package sold and clinic growth bonuses.

·       Complimentary In-House Healthcare: 100% covered in-clinic medical consultations and routine everyday laboratory testing for you at zero out-of-pocket cost.

·       Employee & Family Discounts: Generous discounts on all clinic services, wellness treatments, and retail products for you and your immediate family.

·       Guaranteed Work-Life Balance: Paid Time Off (PTO) and guaranteed paid closures on all major holidays.

·       Supportive & Accountable Environment: A transparent, high-standards clinic culture where exceptional work is recognized and rewarded.

To Apply: Submit your resume along with a brief summary detailing your hands-on experience with IV therapy, centrifuge specimen handling, and presenting treatment packages to patients.
