Job Summary

The McDermott Center serves as the Center for Human Genetics at UTSW and provides expertise and resources for clinicians and scientists to identify genes and sequence variations that contribute to human disease. If you want to work in higher education with world leaders in clinical genetics and research, we have an opening for a Genetic Counselor in the McDermott Center for Human Growth and Development. The role supports the Sequencing Populations to Accelerate Research and Care (SPARC) program, helping define returnโ€‘ofโ€‘results processes, developing scripts and reports, and supporting a cascade screening research project for familial hypercholesterolemia.

Job Duties
  • Serve as a core member of the SPARC operational team to identify, curate, and prioritize the list of genes and conditions for return of results.
  • Develop and maintain educational materials, counseling scripts, and result reports for SPARC returnโ€‘ofโ€‘results activities.
  • Contribute to launching, implementing, and scaling a large population genomic screening initiative as the first embedded counselor.
  • Leverage advanced software and AI technologies to enhance efficiency and accuracy in genetic counseling for cascade screening research.
  • Work closely with a research team, including weekly team meetings and 1:1 meetings with the principal investigator to implement a cascade screening protocol.
  • Educate patients and families about conditions, risks, and management options, addressing concerns about hypercholesterolemia and other diseases.
  • Obtain and examine personal and family medical histories, construct pedigrees, interpret genetic risks for patients and relatives.
  • Assist patients and families in making decisions about genetic disorders, respecting their religious or ethical values.
  • Provide counseling on genetic predisposition, prevention strategies, and implications of positive or negative gene tests.
  • Establish patient referrals to appropriate specialists or clinics for genetic screening as needed.
  • Arrange appropriate genetic testing, including contacting laboratories, arranging sample collection, transporting samples, and receiving results.
  • Conduct research on various genetic disorder studies, initiating recruitment, updating family medical history, and preparing written summaries of encounters.
  • Review all cases encountered with the principal investigator or physician.
  • Provide longitudinal followโ€‘up with patients who have previously undergone testing, supplying written summaries as appropriate.
  • Instruct trainees, including counseling students, medical students, residents, and fellows, in clinical and research settings.
