How much do medical director part time jobs pay per year?
What is a medical director part time?
A Medical Director Part Time is a licensed physician who provides clinical oversight, guidance, and leadership to a healthcare organization on a reduced-hour basis. Their responsibilities often include developing medical policies, ensuring regulatory compliance, supervising medical staff, and improving patient care quality. This role balances administrative duties with occasional direct patient care, depending on the organization. Part-time Medical Directors typically work fewer hours than full-time counterparts, making this an ideal position for experienced physicians seeking flexibility.
What are the typical responsibilities of a medical director part time?
As a part-time Medical Director, you’ll oversee clinical operations, ensure adherence to healthcare regulations, participate in policy development, and support quality improvement efforts, often while managing a flexible schedule. Your role may include mentoring clinical staff, conducting chart reviews, and collaborating with administrative leaders to align medical practices with organizational goals. You’ll likely attend periodic meetings, handle clinical consultations, and provide input on hiring or training initiatives. This setup allows you to maintain a leadership role in healthcare without the demands of a full-time schedule, while still making a significant impact on patient care standards and organizational success.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the medical director part time position, and why are they important?
To thrive as a Medical Director Part Time, you need an active medical license, years of clinical experience, and strong leadership abilities, often supported by board certification in your specialty. Familiarity with healthcare regulations, quality improvement protocols, and electronic health record (EHR) systems is typically required. Exceptional communication, decision-making, and organizational skills will help you effectively guide teams and manage multiple responsibilities with limited hours. These competencies ensure you can provide strategic clinical oversight, maintain regulatory compliance, and contribute to patient care quality within a flexible, part-time framework.

Job description
Puzzle Healthcare is seeking a Physiatrist (PM&R) to serve as Medical Director, providing clinical oversight and leadership across our post-acute and long-term care network. This role blends remote medical direction with periodic on-site support for complex rehabilitation procedures, making it ideal for an experienced physiatrist who values both flexibility and hands-on clinical engagement.
As Medical Director, you will guide physiatric care standards, ensure documentation quality and compliance, and collaborate closely with facility teams to elevate rehabilitation outcomes. You will serve as the clinical authority for PM&R across assigned regions, shaping care delivery at scale.
What You'll Do
- Provide clinical leadership as the physician-of-record for PM&R services across assigned facilities.
- Conduct structured remote chart reviews, documentation oversight, and compliance audits.
- Review and co-sign clinical encounters per state and payer requirements.
- Establish and maintain physiatric care standards, documentation expectations, and clinical protocols.
- Offer remote guidance and feedback to therapy teams, APPs, and facility leadership.
- Identify trends in documentation, care quality, and training needs; lead targeted improvement initiatives.
- Participate in regular virtual check-ins with clinical operations, compliance, and quality teams.
- Support onboarding of new clinicians and facilities.
- Stay current with PM&R guidelines, PDPM requirements, and post-acute regulatory updates.
- Provide occasional on-site support for complex procedures, advanced assessments, or facility needs.
- A flexible, remote-first position with meaningful opportunities for hands-on clinical involvement.
- Collaboration with multidisciplinary clinical and operational leaders.
- A platform to shape care quality, documentation standards, and rehabilitation outcomes at scale.
- Compensation: Compensation is structured as a percentage of collections plus a collaborative stipend. While earnings are variable, the final offer will be dependent on productivity and other lawful factors.
Required Skills
• Medical degree (MD or DO) from an accredited medical school.
• Residency completion in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) required.
• Active state medical license(s) in good standing; multi-state licensure strongly preferred.
• Substantial clinical experience in PM&R, with deep familiarity with post-acute, SNF, and rehabilitation patient populations.
• Demonstrated leadership experience in a medical director, department chair, or equivalent clinical oversight role.
• Strong working knowledge of PDPM, rehabilitation coding, documentation compliance, and post-acute regulatory requirements.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills suited to remote clinical leadership.
• High degree of professionalism, sound clinical judgment, and the ability to set standards across a distributed care network.
• Proficiency with EHR and clinical documentation systems.
