Job description

At Capstan Medical, we're building one of the most exciting and innovative companies in medtech-developing a first-of-its-kind robotic platform for minimally invasive heart valve treatment. Our team combines surgical robotics, catheter-based delivery, and next-generation implants to transform complex procedures into safer, lower-stress solutions for patients and clinicians alike. As a highly collaborative, hands-on team, we move fast, wear multiple hats, and believe the best ideas can come from anyone.
Based in Santa Cruz, our unique workspace blends cutting-edge Bay Area innovation with a lifestyle-driven environment near trails, beaches, and open space-creating the perfect place to do meaningful, career-defining work.
Description:
  • We are building a novel medical robotic application on the cutting edge of efficiency, thermals, packing volume, and reliability, and are looking for an experienced electrical engineer to join our small fast paced team and own our electrical systems from concept to product: design it, prove it through verification, and see it through manufacturing transfer to a product that builds reliably at scale.

  • Collaborate cross-functionally with mechanical, controls, software, and systems engineers

  • Own the electrical hardware design: subsystem design, schematic capture, PCB layout, wire harnesses and cable assemblies, working with external partners for fabrication and assembly

  • On-site building, bring-up, and debug of prototype robotic systems and support of their pre-clinical lab use, iterating quickly toward designs that scale

  • Support manufacturing test and troubleshooting

  • Own design verification, failure analysis, and risk management strategies, including input to EMC and electrical safety testing, to meet medical device regulatory requirements

  • Align your work to company goals, identifying high risk items and helping develop solutions

  • Technical mentor to junior engineers and peers

  • Document and communicate your work through design reviews and released design documentation

  • Identify gaps and pitch in as needed to ensure that the team meets their goals and objectives

Skills:
  • Experience with PCBA design, test, and debug of complex boards with tight heat/power budgets and real time communication protocols

  • Experience with component selection (including cable and connector selection) and designing for high reliability

  • Ability to troubleshoot electro-mechanical systems and PCBAs

  • Experience designing and testing to IEC 60601-1 and IEC 60601-1-2 requirements

  • Experience with using schematic and layout software (Altium preferred) for creating detailed printed circuit board designs and drawings for manufacturing

  • Hands-on experience with lab equipment (oscilloscopes, multimeters, signal analyzer)

  • Understanding of how early design decisions cascade into outcomes later. Ability to make smart decisions regarding DFM, clinical workflow, regulations, and risk management to save time and effort later

Requirements:
  • BS or MS in Electrical Engineering or related engineering discipline, or equivalent work experience

  • Expecting 5+ years of relevant experience (medical device experience preferred)

  • Comfortable working with high levels of ambiguity and an ability to convert that into tangible outcomes

  • Experience with designing, manufacturing transfer, and shipping of medical device capital equipment or equivalent complexity systems

  • Experience with medical device (or equivalent) development process, design control, design verification, and regulatory processes
