Embedded Software Engineer

Description

Embedded Software/Firmware Engineer to support the development of innovative medical device and instrumentation products. This engineer will contribute across the full product development lifecycle, partnering closely with hardware, systems, and engineering teams to design, develop, test, and maintain embedded software solutions for complex sensing and instrumentation platforms.

The ideal candidate will possess strong experience developing software for embedded systems and microcontroller-based products, with hands-on experience in embedded Linux environments and firmware development. This role will support long-term product initiatives and is expected to contribute throughout the full project lifecycle.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, test, and maintain embedded software and firmware for medical device and instrumentation platforms.
  • Develop software for microcontroller-based systems using C and C++.
  • Implement and support both bare-metal and real-time embedded applications.
  • Develop and maintain software running within embedded Linux environments.
  • Collaborate with electrical, hardware, systems, and software engineers to integrate software into larger product architectures.
  • Participate in system architecture, technical design, requirements analysis, and software implementation activities.
  • Utilize embedded Linux toolchains and development environments, including Buildroot and related Linux development tools.
  • Debug, troubleshoot, and resolve software defects across embedded hardware platforms.
  • Perform unit testing, integration testing, and system-level validation activities.
  • Participate in code reviews, design reviews, and technical discussions to ensure software quality and maintainability.
  • Support product integration, deployment, and long-term sustainment efforts.
  • Follow established software engineering best practices, quality standards, and development processes.

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • 3+ years of professional experience developing embedded software or firmware solutions.
  • Strong programming experience with Embedded C and C++.
  • Experience developing software for microcontroller-based embedded systems.
  • Hands-on experience working within embedded Linux environments.
  • Experience debugging and troubleshooting embedded hardware/software systems.
  • Familiarity with Git or other version control systems.
  • Strong understanding of software engineering fundamentals and embedded development methodologies.
  • Ability to work effectively within a cross-functional engineering team.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience developing software for medical devices, instrumentation systems, or other highly regulated products.
  • Experience with Buildroot and embedded Linux development tools.
  • Experience with real-time operating systems (RTOS).
  • Experience with low-level hardware interfaces, device drivers, and peripheral communications.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Baltimore, MD.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $46.00 - $55.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
