What is a medical device embedded software engineer?

Medical Device Embedded Software Engineers are professionals who design, develop, and maintain the specialized software that runs on hardware inside medical devices, such as pacemakers, infusion pumps, and imaging machines. They ensure that the software meets strict regulatory standards for safety, reliability, and performance. Their work involves programming, testing, debugging, and documenting embedded code, as well as collaborating with hardware engineers and regulatory teams to bring safe and effective medical products to market.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a medical device embedded software engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Medical Device Embedded Software Engineer, you need a strong background in embedded systems design, C/C++ programming, and a degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or a related field. Familiarity with real-time operating systems (RTOS), hardware-software integration, and industry standards like IEC 62304 or FDA regulations is typically required. Attention to detail, strong problem-solving abilities, and effective teamwork are vital soft skills for this role. These competencies are crucial for developing reliable, safe, and compliant software that meets stringent healthcare requirements.

What are some common challenges faced by medical device embedded software engineers when working on cross-functional teams?

Medical Device Embedded Software Engineers often collaborate closely with hardware engineers, regulatory specialists, and quality assurance teams. A common challenge is ensuring that software requirements align with hardware limitations and regulatory standards, which can necessitate frequent adjustments and clear documentation. Additionally, balancing the pace of software development with the rigorous testing and validation processes required for medical devices can be demanding. Effective communication and adaptability are essential to navigate these multidisciplinary interactions and deliver safe, compliant products.

What is the difference between Medical Device Embedded Software Engineer vs Firmware Engineer?

AspectMedical Device Embedded Software EngineerFirmware Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's in Electrical, Computer Engineering, or related; often certifications in medical device standardsBachelor's in Electrical, Computer Engineering, or related; certifications vary by industry
Work EnvironmentMedical device companies, regulated environments, quality assurance focusConsumer electronics, industrial, or embedded systems companies
Industry UsagePrimarily in healthcare, medical device manufacturingBroader tech sectors, including consumer electronics and industrial systems
Search & Comparison IntentHigh overlap in embedded systems, safety standards, and certification requirements

The Medical Device Embedded Software Engineer and Firmware Engineer roles share core skills in embedded systems development. However, the Medical Device Embedded Software Engineer focuses specifically on medical device safety, regulatory compliance, and working within healthcare environments. Firmware Engineers may work across various industries without the strict medical standards, making the Medical Device Embedded Software Engineer role more specialized in healthcare applications.

Job description

Work Flexibility: Not available
It's Time to Join Stryker!
We are seeking a Staff Embedded Software & Controls Engineer to design and develop embedded software, firmware, and control systems for complex electromechanical medical devices. In this role, you will work across hardware, firmware, and system integration to develop real-time embedded software and control algorithms across sensors, actuators, motors, thermal systems, power electronics, fluid management systems, and multi-board embedded platforms.
You will partner with cross-functional product development teams to deliver safe, reliable, and high-performance solutions while solving complex system-level challenges throughout the product lifecycle, from concept development through product launch and post-market improvements.
This role will support the Urology portfolio, including legacy products and recently launched technologies that integrate capital equipment, visualization platforms, and fluid management solutions.
Experience in medical device development is highly valued; however, we also welcome candidates with strong embedded software and controls experience from other regulated or safety-critical industries such as aerospace, automotive, robotics, industrial automation, defense, or similar environments. Candidates with experience developing complex electromechanical products within structured engineering processes are encouraged to apply.
What You Will Do
  • Design and develop embedded software using C/C++, bare-metal, and/or RTOS-based platforms.

  • Develop and optimize real-time embedded control algorithms for pressure regulation, temperature control, motor control, sensing, fluid management, and other electromechanical subsystems.

  • Develop firmware supporting sensors, actuators, motors, thermal systems, power electronics, and multi-board embedded architectures.

  • Support embedded software architecture and integration across hardware, firmware, and system interfaces.

  • Collaborate closely with Electrical, Mechanical, Systems, Quality, Manufacturing, and Regulatory partners.

  • Develop scalable embedded software architectures supporting current and future generations of platform technologies.

  • Investigate and resolve complex hardware, firmware, and system-level issues through structured debugging and root cause analysis.

  • Evaluate engineering tradeoffs across software performance, reliability, manufacturability, safety, maintainability, and cost.

  • Support verification and validation activities, including unit testing, integration testing, and system-level testing.

  • Participate in software architecture reviews, technical design reviews, peer code reviews, and multidisciplinary design reviews.

  • Translate user, clinical, and system requirements into embedded software and control system solutions.

  • Create and maintain software architecture documentation, requirements, design documentation, verification protocols, and related technical deliverables.

  • Provide technical input on embedded software design, debugging methodologies, development tools, and engineering best practices.

  • Contribute to future platform direction by evaluating embedded technologies, software architectures, development tools, and engineering practices.

What You Need
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related engineering discipline is required

  • 4+ years of experience designing and developing embedded software for complex electromechanical products is required

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience designing and developing embedded software for complex electromechanical products in regulated or safety-critical industries.

  • Experience developing embedded software using C/C++ on bare-metal and/or RTOS-based embedded platforms.
