What is medical copywriting?

Medical copywriting is the creation of written content related to healthcare, medicine, and pharmaceuticals, often for marketing, educational, or informational purposes. Medical copywriters produce materials such as website content, brochures, advertisements, and patient education resources, ensuring information is clear, accurate, and compliant with regulations. They often work closely with healthcare professionals and must translate complex medical concepts into language that is easily understood by their target audience. Strong research skills and knowledge of medical terminology are essential for this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a medical copywriter?

To thrive as a Medical Copywriter, you need a strong background in scientific writing, attention to detail, and a solid understanding of medical terminology, often supported by a degree in life sciences or communications. Familiarity with referencing software, content management systems, and guidelines such as AMA or GPP3 is typically required. Excellent communication, adaptability, and the ability to translate complex information into clear, engaging content are standout soft skills. These competencies ensure accurate, compliant, and persuasive medical content that meets regulatory standards and effectively communicates with target audiences.

How does a medical copywriter typically collaborate with healthcare professionals and regulatory teams?

Medical copywriters frequently work closely with doctors, researchers, and regulatory affairs teams to ensure content accuracy, compliance, and clarity. Collaboration often involves reviewing scientific data, gathering expert input, and adapting complex medical information into clear, patient-friendly language. Regular meetings and feedback cycles are common, especially when developing educational materials, promotional campaigns, or regulatory submissions. This collaborative environment helps ensure that all content is both scientifically accurate and meets industry regulations.

  • Understanding of writing principles and techniques for fundraising and marketing writing (including strong headlines, the use of hyperlinks, multimedia, calls to action, and other digital and search engine optimization (SEO) elements).
  • Ability to multitask with strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to think creatively, problem solve, take initiative, and work under pressure in a fast-paced environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Search Engine Optimization (SEO) strategy, website Content Management Systems (CMS), and working knowledge of basic HTML elements preferred.
  • Advanced experience in fundraising copywriting preferred, including email, digital, direct mail, major donor experience or experience writing foundation proposals or reports.
