Description:
Coding & Documentation
โข Accurately code radiation oncology diagnoses and procedures using ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS coding systems
โข Code all radiation therapy modalities including IMRT, IGRT, 3D-CRT, brachytherapy, stereotactic radiosurgery, and other specialized treatments
โข Review and analyze clinical documentation to ensure accuracy and completeness for coding purposes
โข Assign appropriate evaluation and management (E/M) codes for physician services
โข Code both professional and technical components for radiation oncology services
โข Perform daily charge reconciliation for professional and technical charges
Compliance & Quality
โข Ensure coding compliance with Medicare policies, LCD requirements, and payer-specific guidelines
โข Stay current with changes to CPT, ICD-10, and HCPCS codes, particularly those affecting radiation oncology
โข Review coding edits and resolve discrepancies in a timely manner
โข Maintain coding accuracy rates in accordance with department standards
โข Participate in internal and external coding audits as needed
โข Identify and communicate documentation improvement opportunities to clinical staff
Collaboration & Communication
โข Work closely with radiation oncologists, physicists, dosimetrists, and radiation therapists to clarify documentation when necessary
โข Communicate with billing staff to resolve coding-related issues and claim denials
โข Assist with training and education for clinical staff on documentation requirements
โข Respond to payer inquiries regarding coding and billing questions
Requirements:
Education
โข Associate degree in Health Information Management, Medical Coding, or related field preferred
โข High school diploma or equivalent required
Experience
โข 1-3 years of medical coding experience, with radiation oncology coding experience highly preferred
โข Experience coding evaluation and management services
โข Understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology
Certifications
โข Active coding certification required: CPC (Certified Professional Coder), CCS (Certified Coding Specialist), COC (Certified Outpatient Coder), or RHIT (Registered Health Information Technician)
โข ROCC (Radiation Oncology Certified Coder) certification strongly preferred
Skills & Competencies
โข Proficiency with ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS coding manuals
โข Knowledge of Medicare regulations and compliance requirements
โข Familiarity with ASTRO/ACR Guide to Radiation Oncology Coding
โข Strong analytical and critical thinking skills
โข Excellent attention to detail and accuracy
โข Ability to work independently and meet productivity standards
โข Proficient in electronic health and medical records (HER/EMR) and practice management systems
โข Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
Preferred Qualifications
โข Current ROCC certification from AMAC
โข Experience with radiation oncology-specific EMR systems
โข Experience with coding for multiple radiation oncology physicians
โข Understanding of radiation physics and treatment planning concepts
