Come work as a Program Medical Director, Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID) with Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH)!
The Program Medical Director, Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID), provides clinical and medical administrative leadership at the program level for services within their portfolio. Reporting to the Senior Medical Director, Vancouver Community, they are accountable within the VP Medicine portfolio at Vancouver Coastal Health. Within this role, the Program Medical Director holds individual responsibility for quality and clinical services delivered by medical providers (physicians and nurse practitioners), while operating within a shared leadership model alongside the operations and broader leadership teams.
The Services will be provided at the 520 West 6th Avenue Central Offices, other VCH facilities, and associated clinics and sites. It is expected that, on average, the time required to perform the Services will be approximately twenty-six (26) hours per week.
As Program Medical Director, Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID) program with Vancouver Coastal Health, you will:
Develop a vision and strategies in collaboration with operation leaders that ensure integrated and sustainable programs and services consistent with established priorities and the vision, values and strategic direction of the organization.
Establish an effective workforce plan in collaboration with key partners and stakeholders that ensures the ongoing availability of qualified and technically competent medical and other designated staff within the context of operational demands and environmental and resource constraints.
Assume overall leadership for medical activities within the programs/services in accordance with the Standards and Code of Ethics adopted by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia to ensure that priorities are addressed and the programs/services goals are achieved.
Lead the identification of educational needs for medical staff within the programs/services and facilitates teaching and research activities focused on incorporating best practices based on evidence into care delivery.
Participate in the development and successful management of capital and operating budgets to complement strategic directions within existing fiscal constraints.
Ensure an appropriate and effective medical performance management system, with clear medical quality, risk, process and utilization management indicators and performance objectives, is in place to assess the delivery of services within an interdisciplinary and multi-site environment.
Implement integrated credentialing policies, standards and practices for medical staff within the programs/services in compliance with accreditation and professional standards as well as codes of ethics.
Create and guide the implementation of effective strategies for continuous improvement of medical services, standards and practice within the programs/services to encourage best practices, improve clinical outcomes, and achieve defined standards of care.
Foster strategic and working relationships with internal and external stakeholders that result in sharing of knowledge, monitoring of trends, identification of opportunities to promote innovation, exploration and partnerships for improvement, facilitation of best practices, improved patient access, and efficient flow of patients across the care continuum.
Lead and build successful collaboration with academic medical leaders to facilitate clarification of roles/accountabilities, ensure integration with the programs/services goals and objectives and compliance with the policies, procedures, corporate vision, and strategic direction for the organization.
Ensure compliance with legislation and safety standards to provide a healthy and safe environment for patients and staff.
Perform related duties as assigned.
Education, Licensing, & Experience:
This position is open to Physicians and Nurse Practitioners.
- For Nurse Practitioner applicants, eligibility for licensure with the BC College of Nursing and Midwives (BCCNM), supplemented by medical leadership experience within a large health organization and a proven track-record in clinical practice.
- For Physician applicants Medical Degree and eligibility for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia supplemented by medical leadership experience within a large health organization and a proven track-record in clinical practice.
- Demonstrated commitment to on-going learning and professional development.
- The applicant will need to be a provider/assessor in the VCH Regional Assisted in Dying Program (ADP).
Knowledge & Abilities:
- Uses sound business acumen to develop and foster collaboration and effective working relationships with stakeholders that promote cooperative goals and contribute to an atmosphere of trust and mutual respect.
- Applies superior conflict management skills and expertise to persuade and negotiate effective resolution of issues / disputes.
- Inspires a shared vision and aligns performance goals and objectives for medical staff to ensure match with service delivery strategy while maintaining group cohesiveness, motivation, commitment and effectiveness.
- Provides timely and appropriate advice and consultation utilizing effective targeted communication strategies to gain acceptance of recommendations and to facilitate effective decision making and operations within the intent of the medical by-laws.
- Builds credibility, understanding and trust in the external community to assist the Communities of Care and VCH to meet its strategic objectives.
