Emergency-Focused Internship Program

Mount Laurel Animal Hospital is seeking passionate and motivated veterinarians to join our Emergency-Focused Internship Program. This unique opportunity is ideal for recent graduates or veterinarians looking to launch a rewarding career in emergency medicine. Unlike a traditional rotating internship, this program is specifically designed to provide hands-on clinical experience, individualized mentorship, and professional growth opportunities. Over the course of this immersive year-long program, interns develop the skills and confidence needed to become competent, independent, and productive emergency veterinarians.

Program Description:

  • Duration: 13 months
  • Objective: To develop well-rounded, confident emergency veterinarians through comprehensive clinical exposure and mentorship
  • Shift Structure: The schedule is divided evenly among four shift types, daytime ER, overnight ER, hospitalist, and specialty block
  • Hours: Three consecutive 12-hour shifts per week, with an additional surgery day during hospitalist and daytime ER rotations (average 42 hours/week)
  • Active participation in ER departmental meetings, Fellow Rounds, lectures, journal clubs, and Morbidity & Mortality rounds
  • Mentorship: One-on-one mentorship on every case, with interns maintaining primary case responsibility
  • Species Exposure: Interns manage canine, feline, and exotic emergency cases

Educational Components:

  • Weekly intern rounds covering core ER topics
  • Intern-led annual case discussions
  • Specialty blocks providing hands-on exposure to internal medicine, surgery, radiology, neurology, and other areas of interest

Responsibilities:

  • Manage multiple hospitalized and incoming emergency cases under supervision
  • Perform spays, neuters, and basic soft tissue surgeries under guided mentorship
  • Participate in patient care rounds and case discussions
  • Collaborate with experienced ER veterinarians, specialists, and support staff
  • Attend hospital-provided continuing education sessions and training workshops
  • Maintain accurate medical records and contribute to high-quality patient care

Requirements:

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM or equivalent)
  • Active New Jersey veterinary license or eligibility for licensure
  • Active DEA license or DEA licensure eligible
