Position Summary

Assumes responsibility for the performance of routine, standardized biological and/or biochemical tests, as well as more complex procedures on blood, urine, tissues, body fluids and other specimens that assist physicians in the diagnosis and clinical management of patients,

Assumes responsibility for actively contributing to the section s productive and cost effectiveness,

Assumes responsibility for recognizing results or problems that require referral to Section Supervisor, Pathologist or Administrative Coordinator,

Assists with the supervisory and administrative functions of the section,

Performs additional tasks as required by his/her designee,

Position Responsibilities

  • Adheres to safety policies regarding safe handling/disposal of specimens, chemicals, biohazardous materials and sharps; maintains a clean and safe work environment and maintains patient and professional confidentiality,
  • Answers telephone giving information according to the nature of the question and within hospital guideline,
  • Be a resource person, if needed if other lab staff has questions,
  • Assures patient results are accurate and controls are within limits,
  • Completes mandatory education in a timely manner,
  • Participates in on-going education (in service, continuing education, etc,
  • Completes patient testing within the defined turnaround time for each assay,
  • Monitors and troubleshoot any delay in testing and look for opportunities to improve,
  • Determines acceptability of specimens; resolves discrepancies with accessioning personnel, procurement dispatch technicians, nursing personnel, physicians and other personnel,
  • Enters or cancels orders in Laboratory Information System according to a requisition or verbal request by physician or nursing unit; forwards requisition to appropriate office, prints bar codes,
  • Maintains appropriate number of reagents and supplies by performing scheduled inventory and observing expiration dates; notifies Supervisor when supplies or reagents need to be reordered,
  • Maintains positive identification of specimens throughout all phases of processing (centrifugation, preparation), testing, resulting and storage,
  • Participates in the training and orientation of new employees and students; assumes responsibility for own competency,
  • Can be assigned to be a super-user to train staff,
  • Performs documents and evaluates required quality control procedures, documents corrective action taken or reason for accepting out-of-range results; notifies Supervisor of any persistent problem that requires additional actions,
  • Recognizes situations/results that need further evaluation/investigation; notifies Supervisor, Manager or Chief of Section when additional action outside one s expertise is required,
  • Reviews on a periodic basis all policy, procedure and instrument manuals in order to ensure compliance and maintain current knowledge of procedure,
  • Maybe asked to write procedures as needed,
  • Verifies that all written and verbal reports are accurate and logical before release; follows defined protocol for reporting critical values, and documents all results and telephone calls,
  • Assists in directing and checking work of employees assigned to the section, and reviews Section results for validity and accuracy of test results obtained by personnel,
  • Assists physicians, nursing staff, technologists, clerical staff, phlebotomists and students in problem solving concerning specimen or result inquiries,
  • Checks in new supplies and places in designated storage location; records date received and placed into use on all reagent bottles/boxes/packages,
  • Perform lot-to-lot comparison, as required,
  • Cleans and maintains equipment and instruments; tests and evaluates new equipment upon request,

  • Consults with Supervisor, Manager or Chief of Section when unusual requests are received or when unusual or conflicting results are obtained,
  • Enters or cancels orders in Laboratory Information System according to a requisiverbal request by physician or nursing unit; forwards requisition to appropriate office; prints bar codes,
  • Keeps concise, understandable records of tests done and results reported (with documented date/time and personal code),

  • Performs and documents maintenance on each instrument according to required schedule; recognizes and troubleshoots instrumentation failures, and documents corrective action,
  • If working as Microbiology senior Medical technologists, performs initial processing of culture specimen by plating on media, including special microbiology specimens for fungal culture, AFB cultures, virological tests, parasitological tests occult blood and other biochemical tests,
  • Prepares stains, reagents, culture media and quality control material as needed; records all lot numbers and expiration dates of reagents when indicated in designated logs,
  • Procures specimen for culture; adheres strictly to policy and procedure to ensure patient identification and proper specimen collection,
  • Stains microbiology specimens and interprets smears, reads cultures; determines morphology, biochemical reactions and cultural requirements to identify organisms and parasites, and performs identification and susceptibilities
  • Performs Quality Improvement activities; assists with the supervisory and administrative functions of the section,
  • Demonstrates proficiency by receiving acceptable performance of internal and external proficiency supplies
  • Participates in the evaluation and correlation of new procedures and instrumentation; performs/documents maintenance according to schedule defined at each bench assignment; recognizes instrumentation failure and notifies Section Supervisor when additional action is required,
  • Perform routine/complex analytical tests on blood, urine, body fluids and other ordered testing procedure accurately, maintains equipment/instrument and perform minor troubleshooting, as necessary,
  • Recognizes results that need to be brought to the attention of the Section supervisor, Manager and/or Pathologist),
  • As a lead technologist the expectation are to provide comprehensive training for all new and current technologist across all the core lab on as needed/scheduled basis,
  • Serve as a subject matter expert and superuser for the majority of our instrumentation
  • Be the primary technical resource that staff can rely on during the shift,
  • Serve as the communication bridge between shift operations and day shift supervision
  • Proactively reach out to the supervisor regarding any questions, concerns or issues that arise
  • Ensure smooth information flow and escalate matters appropriately when needed,
  • Demonstrate leadership presence and decision-making during the shift
  • Provide guidance and support to the staff when technical or operational challenges arise
  • Maintain workflow efficiency and address operational issues as they occur
  • Monitor TAT during night shift and communicate any challenges with the supervisory team
  • Keep abreast and take initiative when problems arise with staffing and any departmental issues,
  • Have daily shift huddles and bring back all the communication to the team
  • Oversees and coordinates technical functions and activities in the Core Laboratory including, but not limited to maintenance, QC review, specimen and instrument troubleshooting

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor s degree in Medical Technology, or a related field (Master s degree preferred)
  • Certification: MT/MLS (ASCP) or equivalent preferred
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in a clinical Laboratory setting, with at least 1 years in a supervisory role or lead role,

Knowledge: Strong understanding of laboratory methodologies, instrumentation, and regulatory requirements for Chemistry, Hematology, Microbiology, and Blood Bank,

Skills: Leadership, problem-solving, team management, analytical thinking, and excellent communication,

Familiarity with laboratory information systems (LIS) and data analysis software,
