Job description

Overview

The American Enterprise Institute (AEI) seeks a full-time research and editorial assistant to James Pethokoukis, DeWitt Wallace Chair and editor of the AEIdeas blog. The anticipated start date for this position is as soon as possible.

The research assistant will work closely with Mr. Pethokoukis as he produces a variety of policy analyses and opinion editorials on topics such as economic growth, innovation, and technology policy. The research assistant will also play a driving role in editing Mr. Pethokoukis's regular newsletter Faster, Please! and producing his podcast projects. In addition, the research and editorial assistant will work with AEI scholars and staff to edit and post blog entries for AEIdeas on topics that span the greater research spectrum of the Institute. The research and editorial assistant will also liaise with AEI's communications staff to disseminate the analysis and commentary produced for the AEIdeas blog with the goal to expose new audiences to AEI's work.

Qualified candidates should submit a resume, a cover letter demonstrating their interest in AEI's mission, an academic transcript, and a 500-word writing sample on any topic.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with research and writing tasks for Mr. Pethokoukis related to his work on economic growth, innovation, and technology policy.
  • Manage submissions and oversee the administrative maintenance of the AEIdeas blog, working with scholars and staff from AEI's four policy research departments.
  • Assist with editing, formatting posts, and searching for applicable media (photos, videos, charts, etc.) for the blog.
  • Conduct research and collect information from journalistic and academic sources for Mr. Pethokoukis's writing projects and podcast interviews.
  • Work with AEI communications staff to produce Mr. Pethokoukis's two podcasts, Faster, Please! and Political Economy.
  • Contribute to data-driven analyses through data manipulation, retrieval, analysis, entry, and extraction.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions at AEI

  • The employee is regularly expected to stand, sit, talk, hear, and use hands and fingers to operate a computer, telephone, and keyboard. This job requires close-up vision for computer work.
  • The employee must be able to lift up to 30 pounds.
  • The employee must be able to work in a confined area.
  • Moderate noise (e.g., from computers, phones, printers, and light traffic) is expected.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in economics, political science, public policy, or related fields
  • 0 - 2 years of previous applicable full-time work experience; previous internship experience strongly preferred
  • Experience writing, researching, and editing material on public policy topics
  • Enthusiasm for public policy pertaining to economic growth, innovation, and technology policy
  • Strong organization skills, attention to detail, and the demonstrated ability to multitask
  • Commitment to AEI's foundational principles of advancing democracy, strengthening free enterprise, limiting government, and bolstering American strength and global leadership

Compensation is based on a number of factors, including but not limited to: scope and responsibilities of the position; a candidate's full-time, applicable work experience; key skills and qualifications; as well as internal and external market considerations. The salary range for this full-time, exempt position is $50,000 - $54,000. Salary is just one component of AEI's total compensation package for employees.
