What is a medical artificial intelligence internship?

A Medical Artificial Intelligence Internship is a temporary position that allows students or recent graduates to gain hands-on experience working with AI technologies in the healthcare field. Interns typically assist with developing, testing, or implementing AI models that help improve medical diagnosis, treatment, or patient care. These internships often involve tasks such as data analysis, programming, and collaborating with healthcare professionals and data scientists. The goal is to provide practical exposure to real-world medical AI applications, preparing interns for future roles in this rapidly growing field.

What types of projects and daily tasks can I expect during a medical artificial intelligence internship?

During a Medical Artificial Intelligence Internship, you can expect to work on projects such as developing or refining machine learning models to analyze medical images, patient data, or electronic health records. Daily tasks often include data preprocessing, running experiments, collaborating with data scientists, clinicians, and software engineers, and documenting your findings. Interns frequently participate in team meetings, present progress updates, and may contribute to research publications or prototype solutions that could directly impact patient care. This hands-on experience provides valuable exposure to both the technical and healthcare aspects of AI applications.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a medical artificial intelligence intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Medical Artificial Intelligence Intern, you typically need a background in computer science or biomedical engineering, strong programming skills (such as Python), and foundational knowledge of machine learning and healthcare concepts. Familiarity with AI frameworks like TensorFlow or PyTorch, data analysis tools, and possibly HIPAA compliance training are commonly required. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving ability, and clear communication help interns collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams. Candidates should have strong news judgment, a proven ability to generate scoops, familiarity with technology and the confidence to chase exclusive reporting in a competitive environment.
The successful candidate will also be able to translate complex technical concepts into clear, compelling journalism for a sophisticated legal audience. They should have strong writing skills and a demonstrated ability to move seamlessly between breaking news, analysis, and longer-form feature stories.
Requirements

  • Comprehensive understanding of the tech landscape, AI, SaaS and related topics
  • Ability to generate own story ideas that are relevant and timely
  • Experience working a beat
  • Collaborative approach and desire to follow the news
  • Ability to juggle daily news and longer-term features and enterprise reporting

Preferences
  • Experience covering the legal industry, including in-house legal departments, law firms, legal associations and regulators, legal technology and artificial intelligence.
  • Experience reporting for a professional audience.
  • Ability to generate scoops, write breaking news stories and deeper analytic pieces
  • Ability and openness to regularly meeting with tech, law firm and other sources
