What is medical accounting?

Medical accounting is a specialized branch of accounting that focuses on managing the financial activities and records of healthcare providers such as hospitals, clinics, and private practices. It involves tasks like billing, coding, insurance claim processing, budgeting, and financial reporting specific to the medical field. Medical accountants help ensure compliance with healthcare regulations and optimize the financial health of medical organizations. Their expertise is crucial for managing revenue cycles and maintaining accurate records for audits and tax purposes.

How does a medical accountant typically interact with clinical staff and billing departments?

Medical Accountants frequently collaborate with both clinical staff and billing departments to ensure accurate financial documentation and compliance with healthcare regulations. They often review and reconcile patient billing records, clarify questionable charges, and help resolve discrepancies that arise between clinical procedures and billing codes. Effective communication and a strong understanding of medical terminology are crucial, as Medical Accountants serve as a bridge between healthcare providers and administrative teams to facilitate smooth financial operations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a medical accountant, and why are they important?

Familiarity with medical billing software, electronic health records (EHR) systems, and relevant certifications such as Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Certified Medical Manager (CMM) are valuable. Attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and effective communication help ensure accurate financial records and collaboration with healthcare teams. These skills are crucial for maintaining compliance, minimizing errors, and supporting the financial health of medical practices.

Job description

About Upsourced
Upsourced is a modern accounting and advisory firm built specifically for fast-growing creative agencies. We combine strong accounting fundamentals with great technology, clear processes, and real financial leadership. Our goal is simple: give our clients clarity and confidence, and give our team a place where smart people can do their best work without burning out.
We move fast. We try new things. We work with interesting businesses. And we don't believe in busy season.
The Role
A Senior Accountant at Upsourced is not a task-taker - you're a technical leader inside our accounting operations. You're responsible for making sure the numbers are right, the work is done well, and the processes make sense.
You'll work alongside a team to support a portfolio of growing agency clients. You won't just "do" accounting - you'll design how it gets done, review the work of others, and continuously improve how we deliver it.
This role is ideal for someone who has built a strong foundation in public accounting or industry and wants more ownership, more variety, and more room to grow.
What You'll Do
  • Execute key accounting deliverables, especially high-complexity accruals and estimates
  • Oversee and review the day-to-day accounting work performed by junior team members
  • Propose solutions to technical accounting and operational challenges as they arise
  • Help design and improve client workflows, close processes, and system setups
  • Identify issues, errors, or inefficiencies and proactively fix them
  • Partner with Controllers and Advisors to support client reporting and special projects
  • Document processes and help standardize how we deliver great accounting

What We're Looking For
  • 2-3+ years of accounting experience (ideally in big 4 / public accounting audit)
  • Solid understanding of core accounting principles and month-end close
  • High attention to detail and a strong sense of ownership
  • Comfort working in spreadsheets, cloud accounting systems, and modern tools
  • Curiosity, adaptability, and a desire to keep getting better
  • CPA or CPA-track is a strong plus

Compensation & Benefits
  • Competitive base salary aligned to role and experience
  • Performance-based raises and promotion opportunities
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • 401(k) retirement plan - 4% match
  • Paid parental leave
  • Company-paid laptop and home office setup
  • Unlimited paid time off - we care about results, not clock-watching
  • Paid holidays
  • Hybrid and remote-friendly work environment
