What is a media systems engineer?

Media Systems Engineers are professionals who design, implement, manage, and troubleshoot the technical systems used in media production and broadcasting environments. Their work involves integrating hardware and software solutions for audio, video, and digital content workflows to ensure seamless media delivery. They support studios, broadcasters, production companies, and streaming services by optimizing systems for reliability and performance. Media Systems Engineers often collaborate with IT teams, producers, and editors to maintain and upgrade media technology infrastructure.

How does a media systems engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during large-scale broadcast projects?

Media Systems Engineers frequently work alongside broadcast operations, IT, and production teams to ensure seamless integration and operation of complex media workflows. During large-scale projects, they are responsible for translating technical requirements into practical solutions, troubleshooting issues in real-time, and coordinating system upgrades or deployments. Strong communication skills and a collaborative mindset are essential, as they often bridge the gap between technical and non-technical stakeholders to deliver reliable media infrastructure.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a media systems engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Media Systems Engineer, you need a strong background in broadcast engineering, IT networking, and audiovisual systems, often supported by a degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with media asset management systems, video/audio transmission tools, and certifications such as SMPTE or Cisco are typically required. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and teamwork skills help you effectively diagnose issues and collaborate across technical and creative teams. These abilities are crucial to ensure seamless media operations, system reliability, and high-quality content delivery.

What is the difference between Media Systems Engineer vs Broadcast Engineer?

AspectMedia Systems EngineerBroadcast Engineer
CredentialsTypically requires a degree in media, communications, or engineering; certifications like Cisco or AVIXA are commonOften requires a degree in electronics, broadcasting, or related fields; certifications like SBE or Cisco are common
Work EnvironmentDesigning, installing, and maintaining media systems in studios, corporate, or live event settingsMaintaining broadcast equipment in TV/radio stations, ensuring transmission quality
Industry UsageUsed across media production, corporate communications, and live event industriesPrimarily in broadcasting, television, and radio industries

Media Systems Engineers focus on designing and maintaining complex media infrastructure, while Broadcast Engineers primarily ensure the operation of broadcast transmission equipment. Both roles require technical expertise and certifications, but their work environments and industry applications differ slightly.

Job description

The Security Products and Solutions (SPS) team owns the full lifecycle of physical security hardware products deployed across AWSโ€™s global data center fleet. Our portfolio spans nine product categories including boundary control, access control, intrusion detection, media destruction, and radio communications.

We are seeking a SYSDEV Engineer II to complement our existing Hardware Development Engineering team. While our Hardware Engineers focus on the design, qualification, and deployment of security hardware, this role bridges those products into the broader security ecosystem โ€” ensuring seamless integration with firmware, network infrastructure, and server platforms.

The SYSDEV Engineer II will be responsible for understanding how security products operate within the larger technology stack, developing and validating firmware and embedded software, defining network connectivity and server-side integration patterns, and driving system-level testing across the full security infrastructure. This role requires a strong systems thinker who can move fluidly between hardware, firmware, and software domains.

Key job responsibilitiesSecurity Ecosystem Integration
  • Architect and maintain the integration of physical security hardware products (access control panels, intrusion sensors, cameras, media destruction devices) within the broader security ecosystem encompassing firmware, network, and server layers.
  • Define system-level interfaces and data flows between security devices, management servers, and cloud-based monitoring platforms.
  • Collaborate with security operations teams to ensure products function reliably within end-to-end security workflows across global AWS data centers.
Systems Architecture & Design
  • Develop system architecture documentation that describes how security products interface with data center infrastructure (power, network, rack, and server).
  • Define technical requirements for new product integrations, ensuring compatibility with existing security infrastructure and network topology.
  • Evaluate and recommend system design improvements to enhance product reliability, scalability, and maintainability.
Firmware Development & Validation
  • Develop, test, and maintain embedded firmware for security devices, including boot loaders, communications stacks, and device management agents.
  • Coordinate firmware release processes including version control, qualification testing, staged rollouts, and rollback procedures across the global fleet.
  • Investigate and resolve firmware-related field issues through log analysis, remote diagnostics, and root cause analysis.
Network & Server Integration
  • Design and implement network connectivity solutions for security hardware, including protocol selection (TCP/IP, MQTT, HTTPS, RS-485), VLAN configuration, and firewall rule definitions.
  • Ensure compliance with AWS data center network security policies and standards for all connected security products.
Testing & Qualification
  • Design and execute system-level test plans covering firmware validation, network integration, server communication, and end-to-end security workflows.
  • Develop automated test frameworks and tooling to support continuous integration and regression testing of security product ecosystems.
  • Support qualification of new security products by validating system-level integration prior to production deployment.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
  • Partner with Hardware Development Engineers to ensure new product designs account for firmware, network, and server integration requirements from the earliest design stages.
  • Work closely with security operations, infrastructure engineering, networking, and software teams to drive seamless deployments.
  • Represent the SPS team in cross-organizational design reviews, architecture discussions, and vendor engagements.
Documentation & Standards
  • Author and maintain technical documentation including system architecture diagrams, integration guides, firmware release notes, and operational runbooks.
  • Establish and enforce engineering standards for firmware development, network integration, and system testing within the SPS team.
  • Contribute to the teamโ€™s knowledge base by documenting lessons learned, best practices, and troubleshooting procedures.
Basic Qualifications
  • - Experience in automating, deploying, and supporting large-scale infrastructure
  • - Experience with Linux/Unix
  • - Experience with CI/CD pipelines build processes
  • - Knowledge of systems engineering fundamentals (networking, storage, operating systems)
  • - Experience troubleshooting and debugging technical systems, or experience that includes strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and effective communication abilities and experience in managing and troublshooting network
Preferred Qualifications
  • - Experience with distributed systems at scale
  • - Experience working on physical security design and implementation of Access Control/Intrusion Detection and CCTV Surveillance systems
  • - 5+ years of systems development experience
